orbit Posted April 16, 2014 Share Posted April 16, 2014 Has anyone dump something back to the mother ocean? I got an emerald crab that likes to wreck havoc in my tank. Currently, he is imprisoned in a soap dish attached on the wall inside the tank. I got this guy from Petco 3 months ago so I doubt they will take him back. I know some people throw the emeralds in the sump but I have a Biocube. The "sump" portion of the tank is behind the display tank and doesn't get lights. It doesn't have room for it to roam about. It just doesn't look suitable for an emerald crab. I don't care for him but I don't want him to die. So my idea is to take him to the ocean (bag him, temp-acclimate him by floating the bag and let him go) along with my hermit crabs. I got enough critters to clean up the tank after feeding. Will they make it? Link to comment
Mpy Posted April 16, 2014 Share Posted April 16, 2014 If it was wild collected from where you are planning on releasing it, it wouldn't be to horrible, but with the diseases they could pick up from the tank and put into the wild it wouldn't be good. Since it is a non native species its a pretty awful idea. Find someone locally who will take it. It wont be quite as bad, but its that kind of situation that causes things like the Xenia taking over parts of the Caribbean. Link to comment

straydog Posted April 17, 2014 Share Posted April 17, 2014 I'm sure what is in these tanks is pretty bad but I don't think it is earth shatering as say an oil spill or a vocano eruption. But your emerald crab and hermits may be placed in a part of the ocean that has no known predators , and that may give you a good feeling knowing they didn't die. But those same criters without predators could change the balance of an ecosystem and destroy who knows what. If its bad for your tank don't unleash its evil powers on the ocean. Link to comment

I wanted to specify that taking him back to LFS (a local Petco in this case) was not an option. My emerald IS from hell. Seriously. Mean little bugger. Attacks everything in the tank. I have a damsel in prison right now for assaulting a blue devil. I know. But like I said in my original post, my Biocube doesn't really have suitable space in its sump on the back.... I don't wanna drop him there to only find him dead in a week. It'd be pretty difficult to remove him too. It's narrow and deep. Link to comment
