Sump advice

Ok I need some advice. I'm finding that the only way I can fit the sump into the stand is to lower it through the top where the tank will be in the future. I'm not super keen on this idea but I'm wondering what you all think? Alternatively, I can use a 20 gallon instead of a 29 and the sump will come out no problem. The display is a 40 breeder.

I know generally it's use the biggest sump you can fit but I'm just worried about having to take it out one day. I guess the only reason I would need to would because it broke a lane if glass or I am replacing it. Either option would allow me to just break the tank and remove it in pieces but again not sure that is a goods answer

Any thoughts?

20g is plenty enough sump for a 40b. While not being able to remove the sump isn't the biggest problem, it is always better if it is removable.

Also, having a smaller sump means you have more room in the stand which you can use for media reactors, an ATO container, dosing containers, etc. Also, having room to run wires and lines around the outside of the sump is very helpful. If it were me I would definitely pick the 20 over 29.

Are you looking at a 20 long or 20 high? If it is a 20 long, it has the same footprint as the 29, and the extra height of the 29 doesn't matter all that much in terms of equipment placement.

Some opt for the 29g for increased water volume.

Make the sump removable, its easier than the worry of "what if's" and "how's" after.

I had my tank built for me, to spec and with the cabinet the same, open front with one door, and a sump that can be slid out easily, my concern was getting something in the sump if it was tall, not a problem to leave it in there, but it was getting it there if needed ... and the skimmer was a close call on this recently :)

My tank is 24" x 18" x 12" high, the sump is 21" x 12" x 18" high, with about 10 inches of water height in it. Total around the 120 ltr mark.

Easier said than done, not always that easy. My 45g cube barely fits my Eshopps adv100 sump and when you toss a reactor a controller, and a number of other items space is at a premium. If you had your tank, cabinet, and sump custom designed than obviously you can have it anyway you want.

I see, I only have my return pump, little pump running the UV (bolted high on the cabinet inner side) and Rowaphos reactor, my skimmer, flow from tank solid pipe, and heater. (and a few chunks of spare live rock)

Still room for other stuff if I needed it, but extra water was my key need too :)

Hope you get it all sorted :)
