Justaerin Posted March 25, 2014 Share Posted March 25, 2014 Hi Guys A friend planted an idea in my head and now I feel the need to try it but I need some help from people who have actually kept small tanks. The idea is a 30 litre or less sps reef. The friend linked me a 7 litre all in one from all pond solutions (that for some reason I can't add a link to). I do keep salt water but its a 2ft cube and I've never touched sps, they wernt really my thing until I stumbled across a multi coloured seriatopora frag. What do I need to get this off the ground and is 7 litres too extreme? Thanks Link to comment
Reefkid88 Posted March 25, 2014 Share Posted March 25, 2014 I wouldn't say it's crazy,very doable but be prepared to tend to it almost like a child lol. Keep up on steady probably 50%+ water changes and very good,strong light and strong water flow,keep parameters steady as well,that's the key. Do you have the link for the tank ? Justaerin Posted March 25, 2014 Author Share Posted March 25, 2014 Funny you should link that thread, I've just finished reading it Time and water changes I can do, have got a par38 36w mixed blue and white bulb that was until recently growing zoas and acans until I upgraded. It's the flow that's got me stumped. the tank in question has a back chamber built in and claims the pump in there runs at 300lph which is something like 40x flow. The seller put up a video showing the tank off and the flow doesn't look great, they may have the pump turned down I suppose. It's got a duckbill nozzle on as it comes into the tank and looks to be adjustable. Link to comment

No point ordering anything else until it arrives as I don't want too much rock or sand. Hoping the stock pump will be strong enough but we shall see Link to comment

Reefkid88 Posted March 28, 2014 Share Posted March 28, 2014 Yeah,you'll need quite a bit of flow to keep sps happy. Probably around 300gph+ should suffice. I personally have a MaxiJet 1200 ( 296gph ) and I want to keep a few sps and don't even think I have enough,and I had a 7 gallon lol... 10 x 3w leds should be fine,are you going for a more full spectrum look ? I'd also make sure you're using neutral or warm whites,also more royal blues than regular blues. Throw a green and a red in there to if they already aren't in the mix with a true violet and a ultra violet. So I'm seeing a lot of tanks that get 100% water changes, how does the cuc handle that? For long term health,100% water changes will keep your tank more stable in the long run. The cuc and coral both should handle it fine,just make sure if your sps don't go any longer than maybe a minute or so ( I may be wrong,someone chime in ). I know there are some tidal species of sps that have become able to withstand the exposure to air for longer periods of time. Link to comment

Reefkid88 Posted March 28, 2014 Share Posted March 28, 2014 You could either opt for a rio pump which are pretty small in size,if you can find 2 maxi jet I think 404 or 606's and sit them kind of ontop of one another and run them into the same tubing with a T valave. Or just get a mp10 LOL !!! I wouldn't go any lower than maybe like 250-280 gph if you want to keep sps. I'd get with dafil more on how many gph his canister filter is running. Link to comment

I did a little looking around and all the external pumps I could find,put out some serious water. So you could add a valve to adjust the flow quite a bit. Link to comment

There is no parallel, it makes a potentially ageless tank, indefinite life span. I've never seen anything fail to tolerate them, but I don't use fish it's all inverts. if I had fish they would be 90% changes with a slow refill Link to comment
