gravel in the sump?

My brother is running a 90 gallon reef with a 30 gallon sump and he noticed a lot of debris floating around in the over flow and pump chamber so he put about an inch of gravel at the bottom ( bag gravel from the pet store that you would put in a goldfish bowl ) to help trap the debris thinking it was being pumped back into the display tank. he also put a couple lbs of live rock in there. being this is not a refugium is it bad to have rock and gravel in it? I'm telling him I don't think that little bit is making any difference. Is there any pros and cons to this or is just not necessary?

The stuff for fresh water tanks is silicate based, not what we use in marine aquariums.

Why not use polyfill or filter sponges for that purpose?
