ps2cho
So my local petco just did a complete rebuild of their saltwater area. Basically they started from scratch and are now stocking a few more types of fish. I've been looking for a small kole tang for about a month now and none of the LFS has found me one. I even put it on their request lists, but nothing.... So I am considering grabbing this one. Especially with it being Petco, I am 100% QT'ing this one. Before the purchase (I plan later tonight since I am currently getting the fish QT ready), should I look for any specific issues? First tang ever... Here's a photo...couldn't get much better since she was hiding behind the rocks. I didn't see any white spots on her... Any other comments or suggestions for pre-purchase checks? Link to comment
Dark_ice
dose it have a return policy? Link to comment
tpme06
I'm not going to lie, my local Petco is one of the better LFS around me... which really isn't saying much. That said, I have gotten a couple of fish from them to date and have had no problems. QT is definitely a good practice. I did have 1 fish who did not make it (not even 48 hours), I know it was not due to error on my part. I learned their marine fish department does not have a return or "store credit" policy, though they did give me 25% off coupons to use over the next few visits. Your local store may be different. Another thing I do for Petco is watch how long they have stock. If it makes it a couple weeks without being sold (or dying), it makes me feel more comfortable, but definitely still QT it as they usually share a tank with other fish (some of which are new shipments). Good luck! Link to comment
ps2cho
The Kole tang is $34....its not even a bad price...I'll check on return policy although its not really an issue to me since I'm not the guy to go back and argue for $30. Link to comment
oceanhighz
make sure it is eating well, always a good practice, especially if you get into more finicky fish Link to comment
Dark_ice
agreed with above, if it eats go for it! Link to comment
ps2cho
Well I bought the tang last night! She is still scared of me, BUT is eating my green seaweed that I soaked in Garlic! I got a partial photo...but if I get any closer to her, she darts back into the PVC pipe. I did however notice that there might be some damage on her, or a disease that I didn't spot at the store. It sucks that I cannot actually get a good look, because she hides immediately and I don't want to add any stress at this point. I'm hoping that in a few days she won't hide when I make movement outside the tank so I can look. From the small glimpse that I had...it could have been marine velvet, but I am not 100% sure since I've never seen it in person. I just did a quick google search. It could also be just some rock abrasion... The fact that shes eating the seaweed on the 1st morning in the QT is a good sign though right? PS: Ignore the cloudiness, I am using up some garbage red sea salt that simply won't stay clear. It takes a week to clear up, but its safe to use and I even follow the mixing instructions too. Wont be buying it again. Instant Ocean has zero problems. Link to comment
slowngreen
I paid like $60 for my kole! Very very cool fish I think, was very fun to watch him swim especially with just the moon lights on, he would go in and out of all the rocks in a figure 8, for long periods of time.congrats on the purchase/new fish friend especially for that price. Mine loved brine shrimp and ate hair algae like crazy. Link to comment
ps2cho
He is officially been in QT for one week now. I am on day 3 of prazipro si a few more left. No signs of ich or any disease. What is the consensus on time if there are no visual signs? 6 weeks regardless or 4 weeks? Link to comment
BOBBARKER68
I would say six weeks I know lots of people by me will do 3 months just to really make sure. Like I always say never rush it, if she is doing well in QT it wont hurt to keep her in longer. Link to comment
