ewilson04
My tank has been up for 4 days and my temps usually hover around 81 ( or so says my JBJ digital thermo), is this normal? the only equipment I have running is a AC70 a wp10 and a reefbreeders value fixture which is about 8" off the water surface. What can I do to bring the temp down if needed Link to comment
Jackal_Knight
Id get a good old glass thermometer just to double check. Is that 81 degrees with out a heater? U can bring down the temp by having a fan blow across the water or get a chiller But 81 degrees isn't a bad temp thats what i run my tank at during the summer it peaks at 83. Link to comment
FlowerMama
Lower a bag of ziplocked frozen RO. Or put one of those little rectangular frozen thingies in a baggie and float it. Get a clip on fan so it blows across the surface of the water. Lower the temperature in the home. Link to comment
ewilson04
i have a jager 75w heater but I have it set low, the temp in the house is 73 degrees. where can you even find one of those glass ones Link to comment
AZDesertRat
Ice is a horrible coolant for a reef, it does not have enough BTU's to do much good and not for very long. A simple clip on fan from Wal Mart for $10 does an amazing job of cooling, so much so you will probably need to put it on an appliance timer or plug it into the same outlet strip as the lights so they run only together. Have it blow across the surface and it will easily lower things 5-7 degrees if you are not careful. Watch the evaporation rate though as this is the cooling method. Back when I ran MH lighting my tanks were 79-81 year round with no issues, today with LED they are 78-79 rock steady with no fans or chillers. Link to comment
Jackal_Knight
You can get a glass thermometer at just about any pet store. There like 2-3 dollars and all the ones i have had, had been very accurate. Id start buy by double check ur temp with another therm and then get a cheap fan if the temp is still a problem. ewilson04
Ya I will defiantly look into a glass thermo gonna pick one up Friday Link to comment
Chadf
If your temp is 81 now good luck in the summer. I'm guessing either your heater or thermometer is faulty. Link to comment
HecticDialectics
Meh your heater is probably turned up too high. 81 with a 73 degree room temp is pretty special with that equipment. Ignore the temperature on the dial. Stick it in a gallon of water and record the temps for a day to find out how much it's off then adjust accordingly. Link to comment
ewilson04
I guess I'm going to pick up a glass thermometer and see what the real temp is and I'll try the heater in a gallon of water if that will help I'm guessing my temp probe is faulty Link to comment
ny300z
yea dont trust the temp on the heater mine is always off. and pick yourself up a small fan at walmart for $4. Thats my chiller in the summer Link to comment
nickpop86
The temp on my heater is off by alot, i hate the dial set to 71* but my tank stays steady between 78.5-79.2 Link to comment
ewilson04
the temp is holding at 80.7 right now Im going to turn the heater down to 74 see if I can get it a little lower Link to comment
ewilson04
Well I got a glass thermometer and the temp is acurate @ 80 degrees. I dont understand how my temps are so high Link to comment
Tenor
Is your room temp is 80? If not then your heater out of calibration. You could turn off the heater to see if the temp will drop. Link to comment
ewilson04
Ya I unpluged the heater and the temp is dropping at I have our apartment at 70 Link to comment
Tenor
The now you need to manual calibrate your heater. Just use a bucket of fresh water and the thermometer to measure the heater temp. I got the Via aqua heater and it temp off about 6-8 degree. Link to comment
ewilson04
I have the jager 75w and you cant lower the temp below 75 on it Link to comment
Tenor
Did you calibrate your Jager before used? Try to research "you tube" for it. I did calibrated my Jager on other tank and it was off like 3 degree. Link to comment
Nocturnal
I have the jager 75w and you cant lower the temp below 75 on it That is a large variance. Calibration from factory shouldn't be 5 degrees off. Can you still exchange it? Link to comment
HecticDialectics
I have the jager 75w and you cant lower the temp below 75 on it Sure you can. You just have to learn how to use the "calibration" feature. Link to comment
ewilson04
Thanks I think I have it figured out just trying to get it set at 79 Link to comment
