Jebao WP-10 Review

I picked up a Jebao WP10 on Amazon prime for like 56 bucks and some change. The price was so good it was time to give one of these inexpensive Wave Maker powerheads a try!

My overall impression is that it brings a lot to the table for the price.

Here's what comes in the box:

And a free random photoresistor? Rumor has it this is for the WP25 and larger models and they just include it in the box. I still don't know. There doesn't seem to be anywhere to install it. Several people said there are some tiny holes on the left side of the controller. I'll have to look again. It sounds like it's operation is a bit wonky, so I will probably not use it.

It doesn't take long to set up. Maybe 15 minutes. It's pretty self explanatory, thankfully. Wait 'till you read the instructions.

I set it up opposite of my MP10 and it's more or less directed at the MP10, but at an angle. I set it into one of it's random flow modes (W3).

The instructions are in "Engrish"...

First impressions...

The Good:
It's really low profile and small. Let's say about the size of a Koralia Nano powerhead only the bracket is lower profile. That part is awesome.
It has a magnetic base with a decently strong magnet. Also awesome.
You can rotate it to some extent. Maybe 35 to 40 degrees? (I don't have a protractor on hand) Extra awesome!
It's really powerful for it's size.
The pump is low voltage (24 volts) which leaves little chance for lethal stray voltage should something go wrong.
It has multiple setting!
It's adjustable!

The mediocre:
The controller has a very large ugly blue knob on it.
The instructions are poorly translated in broken English.
Build quality isn't amazing. It's not exactly poor, but it's not that of the MP10.
It's a little unclear what each of the modes really are. (See picture of instructions)

The bad:
Not much, really.
They provide double sided sticky tape to attach the controller. Velcro would be nicer. (I used my own Velcro to attach it)
Long term longevity unknown.

Ok, so my understanding of the different modes are this:

H1, H2 and H3 are basically just high medium and low settings, constant output. (I had already figured that out)
W1 is a short pulse mode that can be adjusted to make waves in the tank if you really want waves.
W2 and W3 are supposed to be other pulse modes but they seemed a little random, maybe it was because I was testing it in a bucket of really cold tap water and my hand was freezing!
Else mode is supposed to be similar to Vortech's Reef Crest. Random.

I have it in W3 mode at the moment and it's at the opposite side of the tank near the back angled at the Vortech MP-10 which is in Reef Crest mode. What does this do? Some really spectacularly awesome random flow in the tank. Nothing harsh, but really turbulent. Little bits of detritus and small particulate stay much better suspended until they go through the filter. I can't imagine that I'll be finding any dead spots in the tank now. Before the area under the MP-10 was pretty low flow.

Anyhow, it's a nice addition to my MP-10. The WP-10 has a pretty narrow band of flow, while the MP-10 has a really wide flow pattern. If I had to do it over, I would still buy an MP-10 first, but this is a good secondary powerhead if you don't want spend the cash on two MP-10's.

Now, we'll see how long it lasts...

You must have got mine. I ended up getting the 25 because I couldn't get confirmation that the 10 would work with my 1/2" glass. There is a place in the 25 controller to plug in the photocell, but there wasn't one in my box. But since I have it on the lowest setting already, I'm not sure it would have an effect.

Nice review!

I wouldn't use it anyhow. Apparently you have to have some ambient light for the thing to work. It's kinda weird.

Maybe they forgot to tell the person adding the photoresistors to the box that they no longer had a job. I suppose they'll stop coming to work when they realize they're no longer getting paid.

Does your WP-10 make any noise? Mine sounds like its snoring although its not too loud. My Koralia 425 is dead silent. I actually like it better than the WP-10.

I think I read somewhere that the photoresistor is for an automatic night mode or something.

It is, but it appears that they don't all have somewhere to plug in the photoresistor.

My WP-10 is dead silent. I couldn't even hear it running in the bucket of water.

I just realized that Amazon has a much better description of what the various modes are.

How to use: Press the 'MODE' button to cycle through the selection of functions. H: High, constant, non-variable flow (1,000 gph) L: Low, constant, non-variable flow at a third of the speed (530 gph) W1: Short pulses which, when timed correctly will create a back and forth motion and form a gentle standing wave in your tank. Adjust the controller to change the speed of the pulses and vary the size of the wave according to your tank. W2 & W3: Pump gradually speeds up and slows down incrementally to create a varied flow pattern. Adjustable to form the wave best suited to your tank. Else: Reef Stream Mode, a mixed, changing pattern that creates a random flow cycle similar to what you would find in a natural reef. Feed: Press the 'FEED' button once, the blue '10min' light will illuminate indicating that the pump has been stopped for 10 minutes. When the time has elapsed, the light will go off and the pump will be turned back on. Alternatively, press the 'FEED' button again to start the pump. Lock: To prevent changes from inadvertently occurring by accidentally knocking the adjustable control knob, press and hold the 'FEED' button for 5 seconds. The red 'LOCK' light will illuminate and the control knob will no longer function. Press and hold the 'LOCK' light for a further 5 seconds to disable this feature. Caution: WP-10 has no Night feature as other WP DC pump.

But the labels don't match those choices. There is H1, H2, and H2, not H and L.

I think that's referring to S1, S2 and S3. They've probably made multiple small changes to the unit over time.

I think S1, S2 and S3 affect the speed in the wave modes. I think there are now three constant speed modes (H1, H2 and H3), rather than the H and L that the instructions mention.

Oops, you are correct. I read that wrong, I got to bed late last night. Yeah, there are minor deviations there. I think the questionable instructions that came with the pump were clear enough about what H1, H2 and H3 are. I was mostly confused at first what the W2 and W3 were actually doing. And their description of Else just made me laugh.

Actually, looking at the picture of your instructions, it does correctly describe the H1/H2/H3 (other than they listed H1 again where they meant H3). But the Amazon instructions match what came with my WP-25, just H and L.

And I did find my photocell, it was stuck down in the edge of the box.

Here is where it goes in the controller for the 25:

Yes. But do people turn off their pumps at night?

Can confirm: No place for it on my particular WP-10. I looked very closely over the entire unit.

@OP solid review thanks! Looking to scoop one of these up for my 20L and haven't been able to find any real good reviews

It's still working perfectly. Extremely quiet. It was just the right amount of extra flow in addition to the Vortech MP-10 in my 30 gallon.

On the H2 mode mine is nearly silent in a quiet room. H1 produces a slight mechanical/electrical whirring sound as it ramps up and down. Considering most people's tanks sound like diesel trucks it's not all that bad. My return pump is louder.

I've had mine for several months now and it's doing great. On my new tank I'll be doing dual WP-10s with the new controller to create a wide wave effect (40B).

Sorry if I missed it but the "new controller" is that something you've cooked up yourself or is this a feature of the Jabeo's that I've missed?

I just got mine yesterday, overall I like it a lot so far. The controller does feel cheap, but it does what you need it to so it doesn't really bother me. It is louder than I thought it would be when it's pulsing though, it might just take some getting use to because before this I just had a Koralia 240 which was silent, but it makes really nice waves in my ada 60-f. I just hope I get used to the noise since it's in my bedroom lol.

Make sure it's clipped firmly into the bracket. Mine is in my living room and it is dead silent. I can't hear it even when I put my ear up to the glass.

I'll have to double check it, that might be it because I can here it pulsing in the room across the hall haha

I just messed with it a little, to no avail. Still can here it. I might of just gotten a noisy one, What do you have yours set to?

I have mine on reef crest mode at full power in my 30g cube, though even when I had it on wave mode (again full power) I couldn't hear any pulsing. The thing is literally silent. I study in my living room (I need it to be dead quiet), and I cannot hear a thing. I wonder if your impeller is maybe loose or something. Maybe try taking it apart and putting it back together? I know other people have reported they are silent, so I dont think you should be able to hear it pulsing across the room.
