Starting a build and have a few questions about Cree LED's

Hello everyone,

Trying to compare the XM-L, XP-E, and XT-E LED's.

I am getting ready to order my Makers LED heat sink and wanted to order LED's as well.

Does anyone know the difference between the XM-L2's and XT-E's?

I plan on putting this on my 150 Gallon display tank, but looking to upgrade to a 220 Gallon display tank this summer.

Can someone help me better understand the difference in these Cree Led's?

Thanks,

Tim

In a nutshell, at the same current, the XM-L2 delivers 15-20% more flux for 100% more money. Bad deal IMHO unless you're running them at very high currents (2A or more).

Thanks Jedi for the quick reply.

I am looking to start my build on a 72 inch Maker heat sink.

I am looking to use the XT-E leds.

Wondering if I should use the XT-E 3UP leds or individual leds (mix of Royal Blue and Whites)?

With either situations above will I need to supplement with any other type of leds?

The 3up stars are only good if you are running without lenses or are planning on using 40 degree lenses (which are very tight and almost never used).

Even neutral whites are spectrally lacking, especially in the 70CRI minimum XT-E. You'll need to add blue, deep red (or warm white), cyan, and violet to complete the spectrum.

Any good place to start looking and planning my light to have full spectrum on my mixed reef?

I did plan on using Cool and Warm whites mixed in with double royal blue leds.

Sorry for all the questions, but I really want to build my own fixture, as I can add lights when needed.

Please help!

I would poke around the lighting forum here, there are tons of threads and posts to give you ideas :)

So been poking around for hours now...... So I have a 150 with 2 dividers (and so does the 220 I am upgrading too).

So thinking to start I wanted to start with 2 Cree Lumia 5.2 in each section of the 72 inch heat sink (still leaning toward the Maker's as I like the finished look and my current light is suppended above my tank without a canopy). Total of 6 Lumia's.

Any draw back from this thinking so far?

OK, so I did some work on a plan last night.

Shopping list:

  • 72" Maker Heatsink kit
  • Maker hanging kit
  • Storm-X Controller
  • 6 - Lumia 5.2
  • 3 - Coralux LDD 5up driver board
  • 9 - Meanwell ldd-700h driver
  • 6 - Meanwell ldd-1000h driver
  • Power supply? (looking at the 500W 48v 10.4a DC power supply from LGB, but I have heard of problems with some of these)

Looking for a suggestion on a power supply.......

Also looking for input if this is going to be too much or too little lighting for a 150 gallon mixed reef.......
