tanked_kiwi
Hi everyone, this is my first post and first nano, though I have been reading here for a long time now. I have decided to use the lumia 5.2 for this build, having used individual crees on the last build (planted tank) and experiencing the "disco" effect. I have a few questions, but first a couple pics to show what Im working with Overall: Diy light enclosure Questions: 1. Do I need optics on this with the lumia 150mm (6") above the tank? 2. Which Optic? Had a quick play on sketchup and looks like 80 degree would be best? 3. Total height of optic from heatsink face to outer edge? I only have 76mm to fit heatsink, fan and optic 4. Would this heatsink (5.886" x 5.886" be enough cooling with a fan? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks! Evan Link to comment
xmas_one
If you're trying to avoid disco on your new build I would suggest you use a reflector rather than a lens. Reflectors tend to mix the light where a lens will tend to exhibit a collimating effect. Best bet would be to just get both and play around with the spacing to see what works best for you. Ok, sounds like an idea. I'm not at all familiar with using reflectors with leds, is there a specific product for this? Thanks Link to comment
xmas_one
Check out Bens thread on the evil cluster clone. He has a few different ones on there. Also, there's a new lumia build over on rc that's pretty informative. Link to comment
bpaston
A good company to look at is Ledil and I believe Carlco someone will correct me if I spelled it wrong. But both offer quality reflectors, but at 6" above the tank personally I would just run it as is with no type of optic, reflector or otherwise. I believe the CREEs used on the 5.2 lumia are going to have an internal 120 degree optic. An 80 might help with keeping light spill to a minimum, but I'm guessing would not light the full surface area at the top of the tank. My .02 FWIW, I am sure Ben might stop in and give his also. tanked_kiwi
Thank you both for the fast help. Looking through some threads now, loooong threads, will try to find out more about these reflectors. I figured I could probably get away without an optic at that height, but I really do want to keep spill to a minimum. If I can confirm everything will work how I want (questions 3 and 4) I'm keen to order everything including the optic and try both, could increase light height if it will help. Link to comment
jedimasterben
For that size tank, you shouldn't need a lens, tank is like a 12" cube? Just estimating from your sketchup. As for 3 & 4, I have no clue what the total height is, but I know the lens is pretty tall, especially if set to a narrower angle (which moves the lens away from the LEDs a bit). The heatsink should be sufficient as long as it is actively cooled, once you have it running, set it to 100% and leave it like that for a while, then see if you can hold your hand to the heatsink - if not, then it's not enough and you'll need more (which is unlikely, so I wouldn't worry about it). tanked_kiwi
Ok thanks, the tank is a 16" cube, do you still think it would work without a lense? Link to comment
jedimasterben
Yes, that would be fine - a single 5.2 won't cover but an 18" area at the most, so 16" is fine. Link to comment
