RnMB1988 Posted February 10, 2014 Share Posted February 10, 2014 I had a very nice Rising Sun Cycloseris that I got up in Albuquerque NM from SouthWestern Reef Co around the beginning of June 2013. It as a beautiful piece, I really liked it. Well Some how I managed to let it die/kill it. I 'm not entirely sure how it happened, but around the middle of October it did not look well. I did some reading and moved it to a low flow out of the intense light part of the tank, long story short it died. Here are a few pic's. First pic after putting in the tank in early June. The beginning of the end. Today, Ziareefer was in town for other business and stopped by to check out the tanks. I don't really remember him telling me it was a big deal to have a plate coral that was having babies, but tonight he really peaked my interest in this, and again at his suggestion, I am starting this thread to document this as best I can. Zia took lots of pictures of what is happening right now with this pate and I will keep it updated. Link to comment

I've seen this happen on a few occasions, I do not know if it's some form of "keeping the species alive by dying and producing many babies or some other behavior.... Probably the second nicest plate I've heard of doing this, second to a giant deep red one lol Link to comment

I have yet to see a red plate with my own eye's, seen a some very nice pic's though. I did read some where not to throw the skeleton away in case it might grow babies, but every thread I read said the colored one were very rare to grow babies, so I am very stoked about this!! Such a neat lil treasure you got on your hands It was really difficult getting good pix of the babies because there soo teenie. I clearly counted six with possibly two more forming. I'm going to ask my LFS for skeletons of any that arrive DOA now haha. No it's totally just a thing that they do. There should be called Zombie corals, lol A few years ago i bought a piece of a skeleton that a LFS cut into slices. It had about a dozen of babies on it at the time and it kept pumping out non stop. But i've only seen green plates do this Very rare for a colored plate to do it. Edit: Actually i take that back, i recall seeing on r2r (i think Rev) had a red plate do this. But other than that, usually it's the baby poop green ones that do it. Same thing happened to me. I saved the skeleton, now I have over 7 babies. Feed them and they'll grow fast. WOA! Congrats! That picture was like WAPOW! I cant believe two of you have these going on!! Those babies look like there ready to go. When they got to about a dime size, did you notice little stems (like umbilical cords) on the bottom of each that attached them to the main skeleton? Link to comment

Once the skeleton gets big, it detaches from the mother skeleton. Link to comment
thesmallerthebetter Posted February 10, 2014 Share Posted February 10, 2014 be sure to continue to save the skeleton, itll make babies for a long time....vivid aquariums in LA has a skeleton thats been making purple fungiid babies for like 3 years at least also, pm me to sell some of those dime sized fungiids or trade for rare denros/sun corals.....i have picos that need ground cover Link to comment

I wonder if they die on purpose to reproduce? i dont think so. seems very inefficient to loose 80+% of its biomass just to regrow it but in seperate pieces from tiny clusters of surviving tissue. and the dieoff often occurs after a stressor. shipping, rapid change in lighting, physical damage, etc. makes me think its more of a 'hail mary' attempt at survival. I sold it off in a downgrade a few years ago and none of the smaller plates had dropped off by then. Link to comment

Mine are to small to feed yet, unless I was to use a microscope! The "mother" plate was actually only the size of a quarter, maybe just a touch larger. The babies as of right now are size of a #2 pencil lead. I am going to try and get a couple more pic's up today or tomorrow, that will all I can do till the end of March as I will be in Phoenix for school. Link to comment
marko Posted February 17, 2014 Share Posted February 17, 2014 if they are the size of an acropora polyp, then they are big enough to eat what an acropora can eat. i started off just feeding a touch of frozen (thawed) bbs. watched closely and several polyps were definitely closing up over them. now the largest 2 get a piece of mysis or adult brine every day. its so cool how the coral is essentially resurrecting itself, i cant get over it. RnMB1988 Posted February 17, 2014 Author Share Posted February 17, 2014 I dose Seachem Phyto Plankton and Zoo Plankton as well as use frozen reef plankton in the food I feed the fish, and that is all that will be done for the next 5 weeks as I will be gone. These are the best pics I can get with my P&S camera.
