what are some good nature/ocean documentaries?

I've got:

Life (narrated by oprah, yay  )

Planet Earth

Blue Planet

The Life Aquatic w/ Steve Zissou (totally counts)

I've seen:

Frozen Planet (kinda "eh" except the finger of death scene)

(most of) Galapagos

what are some good nature/ocean doc's? any new ones that I'm missing?

they don't have to be mainstream bbc/natgeo/etc... but I definitely don't want anything politically tainted (eg save the polar bear crap, etc.)..

what doc's do you like?

are there any new ones coming out soon I should be watching for?

Netflix has the worst selection of anything in any category. If it isn't current mainstream it isn't there.

You'd be better off just looking on YouTube. Most of that sort of thing ends up there eventually. Just use "ocean documentary" and you'll find tons. NatGeo has a lot too.

I saw a couple at shopko the other night for 9.99/ea, but they were like 20+ years old.. that's ancient as far as our knowledge and understanding of the ocean goes...

BBC has a new dolphin series out right now called Spy In the Pod. Watch some dolphins getting high on some tetrodotoxin.

hmm.. that'll probably make its way over to discovery (I think discovery plays old bbc docs)

I did read about the dolphins getting high.. kinda funny..

Saw that on reefbuilders and had to laugh. Dolphins are pretty badass

sharkwater and revolution by Rob Stewart are really good

reading the synopsis online, this is exactly the politically tainted crap (global warming propaganda) I said I DIDN'T want.. thanks but no thanks. I want my nature propaganda free.

you might as well recommend blackfish while you're at it.

sharkwater is about the decline of sharks due to shark finning, and revolution is about the decline of all life in the ocean, it's not propaganda, it's all based on science.

hitler's eugenics were based on "science" too..

the synopsis of both films included global warming and man's influence on nature. there's "science" on both sides of the argument. not trying to get into a debate here, I just don't want to watch those types of films.

unfortunately man is having a huge influence on nature esp. the oceans even disregarding global warming. FWIW Sharkwater is focused on shark finning causing the decline of shark populations and not global warming. But w/e carry on.

There was a documentary I saw on youtube that was aboit a specific area, if I can find it, ill post the link later

I'd be really interested in that if you end up finding it..

I never really considered youtube.. I was hoping for something I could just watch on bluray, but youtube isn't a bad idea.. definitely cheaper (more money for frags ;))

I'll have to take a look later when I've got some time..

Can you stream to your tv? Or just hook the computer up to it.

I'm not that fancy.. plus our internet at home pretty much sucks, we're in a rural area with limited internet options.. I'll just watch on my phone or laptop..

we had netflix for 2 months, shit wouldn't even load for us unless it was like 3 in the morning <_<

Ah. Well, use YouTube as a reference. Find something that looks interesting and then see if you can order it through Amazon or Hastings.

Just keep an eye on NatGeo and NatGeo Wild if you have a DVR. My current DVR I've had for about 6 months and there is probably 20-30 hours just checked, closer to 60-80 hours (they changed my menu and grouped things into series so it looked like a lot less) of ocean-related documentaries on there in just that time period. They did an awesome one about Mantis Shrimp.

I agree Netflix absolutely sucks for you. Youtube works well, but if you arne't in a rush just DVR anything that seems remotely relevant.

There's a movie called Oceans by Jacques Perrin & Jacques Cluzaud - I remember enjoying it a lot.

judging by the pictures that actually looks really good.. do they offer it in english? I don't know french... I found it, it's narrated by pierce brosnan... http://www.amazon.com/Oceans-Narrator-Pierce-Brosnan/dp/B004D0BXTA

I got a documentary that was narrated by johnny depp and kate winslet (got it for free I might add).. the commentary was kinda dumb (may be great to get kids interested though), but some of the footage was awesome.. it was called Deap Sea, it was originally an IMAX film IIRC..
