Filtration question. ATS vs Skimmer for clam

I am currently setting up a 40B tank with a 40B sump and I have yet to purchase a skimmer. While researching I came across modded AC70s being used as algae scrubbers. Some people were saying that these make your tank TOO clean though and they were having lots of die off from their gsp, and LPS. With many people agreeing lately that clams do in fact like some DOC in their water what is the best option for me to go with for nutrient export? I really like the idea of the ATS because its leaps and bounds cheaper but I dont want it to hog all the good stuff from the clam.

I would love to hear everyone's opinion on this.

From what I've read, yes clams do like to feed off some funk from the water but I have also read of people that have them in tanks with monster skimmers, biopellets, different carbon dosing methods, sps tanks, super clean water etc....

I also think that it has somewhat to do with the size of the clam. If its a small clam then I would give it both strong lighting and not so clean water. I have read that even the small clams use the symbiotic algae in their mantle to feed from in conjuction with filter feeding from the water column. Also, I read that clams love carbon dosing(vodka, vinegar), sponge power(zeo), amino acids and I guess anything else you might dose to feed your corals and get them colored up.

I have a skimmer rated for 100 gallon on my 34 gallon and I dose Reef Biofuel(carbon), my clam is doing great. I have had it now for about 3 months and I see a whole new lip of white growth. When I bought it was almost 3 inches

So in conclusion I wouldn't put to much emphasis on the effects your choice on nutrient export method will have on your clam.

Again this is only what I've read on this forum, just relaying the info

Another option to deal with nitrates is a deep sand bed either in the display or the sump. Some folks are afraid of them but I have always used one. One word of caution, you don't want to gunk one up with over feeding though.
