feeding a clam

some people say you have to feed clams, others say you dont have to, who actually feeds their clams, what do you feed and how often and what method do you use?

I got my clam last week. I'm not planning on doing any special feeding, provided it stays looking good. I have 4 fish and feed a fair amount so I have to think my water has enough junk in it to keep the clam happy.

We will see. I'm reluctant to dump a bunch of dead algae into my tank.

ive seen people take small clams out and put them in a dish to feed, i dont have fish so i may have to feed

If you dont have any fish you definitely need to feed. A clam will starve under all the light in the world without an ammonia source.

is it better to feed in the tank or out? and i picked up some seachem phytoplankton, and was looking into reef nutrition phyto as well, would these work or should go for another brand

The seachem is good. Feed in front of a strong enough water flow to spread the feed around the tank.

I recently added a small maxima about 1 1/2" long and a divers den ora derressa that I plan on moving to my 75g once i get it running and settled. Right now in my 20L they are in I have been adding about 3ml of Kent marine photoplex every other day with a 6g water change every week. I'm not sure if the photoplex is the best clam nutrition and I plan to switch to dt's brand soon as I hear that's much better.

I just found out the hard way that photoplex may drive your skimmer nuts so be sure to shut it off or have the collection cup drain out into a larger container to keep it from over flowing. I may just set up a different tank and just run skimmerless since i just added another deressa and a squamosa. That's way too much of a feeding requirement for a reef tank of my size.

you might get away with turning off the skimmer to let the clams feed

I leave it off for nearly 12hrs but when I kick it back on it's just a foamy mess. I've never seen anything like it before adding photoplex into my system.

I feed half the dose it says to feed for a 50g system in my 20L with 10g sump. I have a few sps frags and a couple colonies, and four tridacnid clams to feed in such a small volume of water. I'll be expanding to a 75g and using my current 20L as a sump as soon as next week. The extra water volume should allow me to feed a bit more heavily.
