keydiver
I prefer to keep dragonets in a smaller tank, so much easier to feed them. Those rubies are amazing, probably the best colored ones out of all the dragonets. If i had your tank Id be very happy, awesome selection of corals and fish. I'm going to look into picO aquariums as soon as they list some stuff. How many gallons does your tank hold? How do you clean the false wall, is it textured? The Rubies are stunning, definitely one of the most unique species of the dragonets. They also take prepared foods more readily that other mandarins so that's always a plus. The tank holds about 8 gallons, its 15x15x9. Chris at PA does some really great work, I would highly recommend getting a tank from him if you're looking to set up a pico. As far as the false wall, it's textured but not super rough so it doesn't get too dirty. I haven't had to clean it thus far due to my overly abundant supply of dwarf ceriths. And thanks for the kind words! How often does it spawn? Reason I ask is I had one in my Evolve 8 and moved it to my 34. In 3 mos I will have had it a year and never saw it spawn. I also have 5 more in the 34 and next week I'm anticipating a few more. They're all among 2 rocks. I've only heard to feed them and they'll spawn. Do you know the frequency? I've had this one for over a year and a half. The first year I had it, it got fed on a weekly basis and didn't spawn once. As soon as I moved it into this pico and started feeding it daily, it has spawned several times for me, heavy feeding is definitely a stimulus for spawning in this species. Unfortunately for me, you need both a male and female to get sexually produced offspring. I'll probably bring in a couple more form my main tank when I go back home for a visit and try my hand at raising them. check out this thread I started on rock flower anemone breeding. I haven't done it myself, but it's been successfully done in aquaria. all you need is the two genders and heavy feeding http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/339938-rock-flower-anemone-breeding/ Heavy feeding really does do the trick. I'm really excited to try breeding them. And I've looked upon that thread several times for reference the first couple times he spawned, thanks for the resource! Great looking tank man! I love all the Rhodactis especially the Rainbow! What kind of maintenance schedule are you using? Dosing? Also the iPhone is taking great shots! Don't be sorry The Macro's aren't amazing but they are good enough. Thank you! I really appreciate all the positive feedback! As far as maintenance goes, a 2ish gallon weekly WC is all that I'm doing, aside from daily-subdaily feedings. I set this tank up with the college life in mind, that's why it's a mushroom dominant tank. I didn't want to have to worry about pristine water quality in between trips home, weekends out with friends, class schedules, and all that jazz. Link to comment
spazizz
I am very tempted to steal your idea, single dragonet in a picO. I was more worried about coralline growing on the textured wall, maybe a wire brush would work(I like my tank to look very clean). I am wondering if any one is breeding the rubies, seeing one the other day in person and then seeing yours really has set my mind on one but only if i can get it tank bred. I could probably settle for a green dragonet though. Any ways you have spectacular tank. Link to comment

The reason I picked up a male and a female is for that purpose, eventually I want to start breeding them out. Luckily for me, I have an entire ornamental aquaculture lab at my disposal here at the University of Florida, so when they do spawn, I'll be ready Link to comment

keydiver
How do you go about sexing a rock flower? Apparently the only way to tell is when they spawn. But since you have several odds are you've got a nice mix of m/f. There is no sexual dimorphism between the two genders. Link to comment

That's what I was wondering like egg/sperm floating around, they'd meet behind a rock and say, hey you're new around these parts and bond? Link to comment
hypostatic
lol, i don't think so. "something" gets released, but they stay pretty much in the same place during the event Link to comment
keydiver
Does one release sperm, and the other releases eggs? Or does just the release of sperm happen? The male releases sperm, the females do not broadcast spawn their eggs. They will take in the male sperm and fertilize their eggs internally, then the fertilized eggs will be transported down the anemone and deposit themselves under the females skirt out of harm way. hypostatic
its interesting how many different ways anemones reproduce. i know there's one type that gets fertilized internally and then some time later a smaller anemone crawls out of its mouth haha Link to comment

keydiver
Got rid of the RBTA, and moved some other things out to make room for mushies and rock flower anemones Update: More and more mushrooms are rolling in, I pick them up when they catch my eye, I've recently added: Gonzos Golden Dragon Gonzos Blue Moon Watermelon Stripe a big purple rhodactis a teal and gold yuma I also brought up some more ultra rock flower anemones from my main tank at home, and had a spawn very shortly afterwards! Hopefully we'll be seeing some nice colored little guys in the following weeks. keydiver
Well almost 2 months since my last update. Both of my ruby reds jumped out of the tank on the same night (Super bummed). I just had gotten them onto frozen foods and they decided to do a dual suicide. Found one on my screen and the other next to the tank. Definitely going to try my hand at them again, I just need to make my screen top more dragonet-proof. On the plus side, I've been keeping busy with new projects. My rock flower anemone breeding tank is coming along nicely. Just finished the stand today and weight tested/water tested the tank, all is good there. I should have it set up within the next couple weeks here. http://s1122.photobucket.com/user/keydier/media/IMG_2067_zps8b4838af.jpg.html'> http://s1122.photobucket.com/user/keydier/media/IMG_2068_zps6e81322c.jpg.html'> The pico is coming along well! The only complaint I have is that my jawbreaker has been shrunken up for a while now and I'm a bit worried about him. Might try moving him to a different tank as it could be something with lighting. Everything else is looking great! I'm starting to stockpile rock flower anemones for broodstock in my breeding tank. keydiver
What kind of mushroom is the one on the left that looks like a hairy mushy with orange bubbles???? It's way cool!!!! Some type of bounce (I'm suspecting it's a wild type). I picked it up about a half a year ago and it's grown tremendously since then. Unfortunately I paid the price tag for a real bounce, but whatever, I love it all the same. Link to comment
