Reef Octopus BH-90 skimmer review with lots of pictures

I choose the BH90 over the BH1000 because I heard this body shape is more efficient at skimming. The internet is really lacking reviews on this skimmer so here's mine. Ive only had the this skimmer for a few hours so ill do a update later on of the performance. This is my first skimmer.

My tank is 37 gallons bare bottom with 3 fish.

Now for pictures

Assembled. It was very easy to put together, took me two seconds.

The in and outlets aren't lined up, not a huge problem.

After a hour of running this is what I got

This screw doesn't fit under the lip of the rim, once again not a huge problem.

I do have this extra tube it came with, don't know what is for. My guess is that it's for the drain on the skimmer cup but the thing is only 18 inches.

My wife commented on the height of the skimmer <_<

Here are the specs

Nice review, how tall is the skimmer? Looks like good foam to me.

I just cleaned the algae off the sides of my tank and the skimmer is skimming it out. :)

Small update. The skimmer is doing great. It's amazing the amount of nasties that it's pulling out, I would have never thought about how much crap was just floating around in my tank. A skimmer so far is the best piece of equipment Ive bought.

If any one is wondering about the noise level, the pump is quiet but I can hear the air bubble churning from across the room which I assume is normal with skimmers. It's much quieter than my HOB filter I use to run. The foam really builds up on the skimmer lid which leaves it super grimy, it's so gross.

My water is now crystal clear and really shows of my 10k ushio, nice bright white color. It really brings out the colors of my fish, particularly my percula clownfish.

Can we see what it looks like from the front of your tank?

lets get a FTS

I feel like I should start a build thread now that I took a picture of my tank.

It's been pulling a lot of nasties, so I guess it's working well! I was skimming dry for awhile but that just made the neck really dirty. So now I'm skimming wetter which is keeping the neck cleaner.

hey buddy, how are you liking the skimmer?

good to know. i just pulled the trigger on one of them. I recently purchased an anemone, so i figured it's time to add a protein skimmer :). I've been pushing it off for a while because they are quite expensive but after doing some research, and by observing my tank, i've realized water changes with a canister filter aint enough to keep everything perfect! (unless you have endless hours to be working on cleaning the tank)

Ill never go with out a skimmer again. I tried skimmer and ATS only for few months but now im adding filter media to the list. I was getting way to much large particle detrious build up so hopefully the media catches that. I have all of my bases covered i think with 3 forms of filtration.

I only have to empty the skimmer cup once a week, it's usually filled 1/2 to 3/4 by then. My only problem with the skimmer is the endless amount of bubbles that come out it, I guess that's why they included the foam. But thats just another thing to keep clean <_<

ahh i see. I hear mixed reviews about the micro bubbles. Some people seem to get alot and others seem to get none. is this possibly an air flow issue?

They arent microbubbles, they are large bubbles. They are no big deal, if I didnt have the foam guard they would immediatly pop and get salt on every thing. It just draws air when the water exits, I guess bubbles get mixed in. I had the same issues with CPR HOB refugium.

Hey- you still like your skimmer? I'm looking to upgrade from my too small Aquaticlife skimmer for my 34g to either the BH90 or BH100. I have a 10g sump and it would hang there.

It works well. Since this is the only skimmer Ive owned, not sure if all the bubbles getting caught in the foam is normal.

My only real issue is this.

It takes up so much room, but it's HOB skimmer though so that's just how it has to be.

It'll hang off my 10g sump so I think it'll be ok. I may have to cut off more of the black plastic off the back of the light fixture. Thanks.

I am setting up a 40b in a month or so. I have looked at this skimmer also. One question I had was what is the dimension from the top of tank to top of skimmer

Link to comment

Question now, since you've given the measurement from the top of the tank to the top of the skimmer would you mind giving the opposite? I am curious whether or not this skimmer will fit on my 20g long without it hitting the stand.

Link to comment

about 13 inches from the rim to the bottom of the pump. so a little tall for a 20 long if the stand is significantly wider than the tank. since the bottom few inches are just the pump which is much thinner than the skimmer body you might be able to fit it still.

Link to comment

I might still be able to work with it, worst case I can hang it on the side of the tank, since it is a frag tank it doesn't have to be all that pretty as long as it is functional.

I finally put mine into my 34g to break it in. Just don't know what the fat tube is for. Duh, it's the bottom of the collection cup, which I guess I would have flow back out into the tank if I'm gone for a week to make sure
