When choosing rock, i'd go with whichever has highest surface area, it takes less of the volume of your tank while allowing more surface area for beneficial bacteria and critters to colonize (increases filtering capacity, allows for high (more stable) volume). Only downside is that some funky hitchhikers can hide very easily...

I think I will go to my LFS and see if I can hand pick the bigger surface rocks when the time gets there. That way I can stack it and create a layout that gets enough exposure.

Is there anything I can do against the possible funky hitchhikers?

I decided to go with the OceanRevive Arctic-S026. These are affordable LED's and have received good reviews from the users on several different websites as well as on here

This week the lights should arrive. And today I was drawing up some ideas for the layout and the way I could make a stand.

Let me know what you think of it.

The next will come in end of January so until then i will probably be working on a stand unless I can use my old dresser with some extra support build in.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this tank! :)

Thank you! Going to pick up the tank Tuesday hopefully and then figure out what to do for a stand and how to hang my lights.

Got busy with Sketchup today and figured out the stand I want to build roughly.

The top layer is to show the underlaying structure.

Here is the final product

The tank wil go right. On the left side I will put my dresser since this tank will go next to my bed

Height is 50cm (20inches) 1m wide (39inches) and 30cm deep (12inches).

Thanks man! On monday I will probably go to the local hardware store and get it all cut up and then I can build it later that week.

First time in years to get some manual labor done...

Slowly getting there.

Received my jerrycans (50L in total in 3 separate sizes, 2x 40L, 1x10L with tap). Also got a 10L bucket for cleaning and a small Tupperware box for acclimating fish and corals. End of the month the rest will come in and with some luck I will start the tank.

On top of that my friend will give me some of his rich sand. Lots of tiny brittle stars. This is so we can shorten the cycle even more.

We will introduce the sand twice. On start and close to the end of the cycle to reduce. Going from a 4-6 week cycle to a 1-2 week cycle.

Then to top that all off he will give me one of this BTA's from his anemone tank (35 species all in a 5g tank. Truly amazing). By putting in the anemone first, I can give it enough time to walk around and find his spot. While I introduce the BTA I will add the two false percs (very young and tank bred from my LFS). This will be their home for the year I am in the Netherlands. After that they will go into a 50g tank to grow and breed for my friend.

As for the stand I wanted to build I decided against it for now. I will use my dressoir and strengthen it. I hope this will be strong enough.

Well this kind of sucked in a way.

I am in the middle of working on a visa and called the American Embassy here in the Netherlands to ask about wait times etc.

Apparently the European wait times are so short I will not be moving end of 2014. But the way it looks now I will be leaving in August.

So starting a tank right now would be a waste of money. So this means the more I save now, the better it is for my move.

So for now this topic has to stay closed until I kick start it again when I am in the USA.

I was looking forward to start at the end of the month... Oh well more opportunities when I move.

Thank you all for following or who have checked in from time to time when I posted.

Oh too bad. But yeah, Florida sounds great aaaand you can order lots of stuff from American websites yay!

Good luck!

Okay so after talking with the fiancee, I got the go ahead to start planning and gather prices and gear etc. So that when we our apartment when I move, I can setup a tank slowly piece by piece.

She wants to go a long tank after seeing this tank http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/296235-3-foot-office-nano-mr-aqua-12-gallon-long/ from Scorched.

That way we can start small and grow from there as we grow as well in the apartment we plan on getting when I move.

I think I will go with 2 Kessil 360W suspended from the stand we have her dad build (he did that for a living wood work). The two Kessil's will provide enough options for when we expand to a bigger tank when this one starts growing. So time to slowly edit this topic as the year progress. This will be the world slowest 12g tank ever haha.

After talking to Dave from NanoBox, I will be going with his custom lights. So updated that.

I also worked on the layout for the room the tank will go in. Considering we will be going with a gated community most houses have the same layout and size. So with that I was able to come up with some sort of a design for the room. It is still in the early phases or design.

Obh2R3e.png

The lines up front is a build in closet, which is perfect. This is still a rough sketch and I will work over the next couple of months refining or maybe even changing it. I want the tank to fit in the place.

I am lucky that my fiancees father is a woodworker and has been in the field for over 40 years. This gives us the possibility to come up with some amazing designs with wood.

Been working on getting a room with the average lengths so that I could figure out how to place the tank in the office space we intend on making.

My fiancee gave me some thoughts she had for desk wise. She is a case worker and wants a long desk to work on. So I made a long desk on the wall.

At the corner of the table where the tank stand is a closet for the sump etc. Above the tank the lights will hang on a bookshelf. This way I can put some daily things above the tank. Let me know what you think of the design and if this could work.

Time to give an update. And need some feedback on if some things will work. i.e. the powerheads.

I will keep updating this as I move along with the process.

I have some ideas that I will be posting here and hope to get feedback on. I have the opportunity of getting a 65g as a wedding gift from my fiancees friend. She put hers in storage after getting rid of her turtles. Currently waiting on pictures and measurements.

So here is what I plan on getting equipment-wise for the 12g:

  • Tank: Mr. Aqua 12 Gallon Long (3 foot long club here I come!) (Marinedepot)
  • Sump: 10 gallon tank (Deep Blue that my fiancee already had from her Betta)
  • Heater: Cobalt Aquatics Neo-Therm 150W (Marinedepot)
  • Lighting: TBA
  • Rock: BRS or Marco's
  • Live sand: Caribsea

Plans for the 12g? Make it a BTA only tank, a tiny clownfish pair. I see this as a swimming lane. I got this idea from my buddy who has 15 BTA's in a small tank that he grows, frags and sells. So I thought and want to use those BTA's to grow for a future tank where it will have a substantial size.

Equipment-wise for the 65g:

  • Tank: 65g tank (unknown make for now)
  • Sump: 20g Long (during gallon sale!)
  • Heater: TBA
  • Lighting: Kessil 360w
  • Powerhead: Vortech MP40w+MP10w or 2x MP10w. (need recommendation here)
  • Rock: BRS or Marco's
  • Live sand: Caribsea

Plans for the 65g? I want to create a mountain style tank. Starting with corals that want a lot of light on top and then go down showing the differences in different colors and corals.

Times change, plans and thoughts change as well. I will be moving to Florida in 3-4 weeks. I have my consulate interview the 28th and then I have to wait for my passport to arrive. Updated the starting post.

I edited the starting post. We finally came to the tank we wanted which will be the IM Fusion 10. Its perfect sized for her bedroom and the location it will go on.

I haven't included everything and hopefully a local reefer can help kick start the tank so I don't have to get the bio-spira.

The Kessil will be purchased later down the line as well as it isn't released yet. Small stuff I haven't put on there but it will all add up to a pretty large amount for some quality items.

Mixing salt I might do with just a wooden spoon since it will be a 1 gallon a week probably.

Pretty excited to get it started soon once I have moved. Three more weeks. Tomorrow is me starting to pack one of my suitcases with summer clothes since its cold here and I do not need them anymore haha

Daaaaammmmmn... This is the tank I want next Spring! It's out of stock now. Saving $200 on it would have been nice, but then I would have had to store it for a few months.

NICE deal!

I had to take the deal! Especially since I have it confirmed by BRS and a local IM reseller that they are dumping the 30L and the 30 and 40 Micro's.
