Matt_95
Some feeding responses My acans This Red and purple one looked like it had an anchor dropped on it, was all smashed up. It hasn't extended fully yet but it extends further every day, I think it may be adapting to the higher lighting as well. Anyone know what the two corals that aren't acans are? I'd like to know if they have any special needs. Difficult to get a good photo of the green one Acros They don't have full PE yet but they have a little more everyday. This one has white polyps, in the wild it was a rich purple. FTS, I need to clean the glass, I have a few diatoms. Link to comment
Cameron6796
I guess that's a good point that if you collect them your self they don't sit on the beach or in a boat all day. I know very well that my coral is coming from the ocean, I wasn't trying to insult you in anyway im just wondering where you are collecting and i in no way have control of your decisions I'm just worried that one day we won't have reefs. Sorry if I offend you. Ps the pics look great love the scoly Link to comment
Matt_95
No worries, I'd rather be able to cherry pick my own corals than by a $80 brown acan from the lfs because all of the nice ones have been sent to America. I have only ever seen rainbow Acans in the wild, all of the collected ones aren't usually available for us to purchase. The reefs here are safe, collecting doesn't have an impact on them. Thanks, I think it's pretty unique. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Well that's awesome, I think I asked but where do you live. Link to comment
Matt_95
Oh you did, I missed it sorry, I'm from Queensland, Australia. Link to comment
Matt_95
I've been considering how I will stock this tank for a little while now. I don't want to have the same fish that everyone else has in their reefs. I am thinking I will go for a pair of endlers, they are found in brackish waters in the wild but can live in marine or fresh water. In the hobby they are usually kept as freshwater fish. Once I get hold of a mini carpet I will also go catch myself a pair of penderson shrimp to host it. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Oh you did, I missed it sorry, I'm from Queensland, Australia. That's awesome great Acans there. Kind of jealous now that I know where you can collect from. Endlers sounds very unique no one has done that that i know of. Link to comment
Matt_95
It's actually not that easy to find really stunning ones, apart from acropora, I'd say they're the dominant coral where I live, and the vast majority are brown or very dull. I'm thinking I need to buy a waterproof torch with blue LED's so I can see of there are any nice ones that I am missing. Their colours change a lot between the sun and aquarium lights. Hopefully there will be some demand for their fry, I don't want to be stuck with huge amounts of them. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Yeah I know I've seen pictures of people at night take photos of brown corals and then take blue LEDs and they begin to fluoresce Link to comment
Matt_95
I got given a group of 9 endlers today, they don't look like the old black bars I used to keep, they look more like endlers that haven't been line bred. I've started acclimatising them to salt water today. I also located some maxi-mini's near by, purple and green. They're only $10 each which is a lot less that I was expecting so I got three and they are being delivered Wednesday. Here's a few new photos. The white Xenia has yet to open up for me, not sure what's going in with it. http://s869.photobucket.com/user/mthom211/media/IMG_3965_zpse3ab1260.jpg.html] http://s869.photobucket.com/user/mthom211/media/IMG_3957_zpsd85ae42c.jpg.html] http://s869.photobucket.com/user/mthom211/media/IMG_3955_zps95104a0c.jpg.html] http://s869.photobucket.com/user/mthom211/media/IMG_3960_zps9ecc37ec.jpg.html] http://s869.photobucket.com/user/mthom211/media/IMG_3948_zpsc807489e.jpg.html] Link to comment
Matt_95
Was on our deck watching the storm come over and thought you may like to see just how close I am to the reef. Sorry for the quality of the photo, only iPad quality, it's dark because there's a huge storm coming over, it's 4pm and it's as dark as 7pm. The island is a coral atoll with a reef around it, used to be a penal colony. It takes about half an hour to get there in our boat, there's a closer island to the right but you can't see it from our deck. Link to comment

Matt_95
Thanks! I'm going out again next week to get some more coral. I'm going to get some more SOS for the top. The frags I added have been doing well, some damage that was on them has healed up and they're showing PE. I'd like to get a blue, yellow or green one. I want a few more acans as well, hopefully with a bit more colour. Here's a little acro crab I have, he hasn't been around the acro though. From a bit of googling, he may not be so beneficial. He's confined to the HOB for now. I got my carpet nem! I got three, however one didn't look so good upon arrival and I removed it as it was starting to die today. They're pretty small but I can't wait for them to get some size on them. I found these shrimp, not sure what they are. New FTS. Starting to be satisfied with coral placement. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Have you considere bringing a blue led light with you to see how they fluoresce Link to comment
Matt_95
I have but I haven't found one yet, I've found a few that say waterproof, but they're used to see fish from above the waters surface, so I assume waterproof actually means splash proof and I don't know how they would do a few meters under water. I'd like to try find some of our local scollies when I go. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Yeah they fetch a hefty price where I am some are crazy like 200 - 400$$$$$$ Link to comment
Matt_95
I can't imagine spending that much!!! Going out today to get some new coral :D Link to comment
Matt_95
So I got a few acans, much nicer than the first lot I collected. Unfortunately a few are on metal and I didn't realize so I am going to have to seal them with something. I also got two rhodactus and a new acro. My endler has been in here six days now also. Mr. Microscope
I really like this aquascape. It looks a lot larger than four gallons. Well done! Link to comment
Matt_95
Thanks very much! I can't wait for it to be all grown in. Link to comment
Matt_95
I'm getting large amounts of detritus building up in here, I did a 100% water change today to try remove it all. Filled the tank back up and there is more detritus visible than I started with. I've added a filter sponge and have been getting the detritus into the water column with a baster where it appears to be collected in the filter sponge. I think I need a small power head for this tank to stop so much detritus from settling on my sand bed. Also, my endler colony slowly dwindled down until I had none left. Turns out the shrimp I have had in here have been picking them off. They're vicious. I caught them and fed them to my corals. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Wait you fed them to your corals ????? Link to comment
mantisshrimp1234
Whoa man, what will you stock in your tank that doesn't get eaten by those corals? Link to comment
Matt_95
Yeah I did. Wel the coral only ate the shrimp because I fed them to it. I'll get ahold if some more endlers to restock with. Link to comment
Matt_95
I've been wanting to add something blue to tank. I did some searching and El Fab recommended yellow tail damsels as a good pico fish. He had his long term in a 3 gallon so today I went to the LFS to grab one and a power head. They didn't have much range in power heads so I'll go somewhere else for that. But I got the damsel. It looks amazing, it doesn't have a yellow tail though, I'm assuming it's another species? If it gets too big for the tank or it looks cramped, I'll move it into my larger tank when it's up and running, I traded my hailea 130a for a 500a so now I am turning my 60 gallon cichlid tank into a marine tank, and I have koans to upgrade it to a 5x2x2.
