Giga
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO my wife says I have a problem, and she very well might be right, but what can I say I didn't think I was gonna post this here but Vic's viv is here so I figured I'd post my latest creation in the works. I'm thinking it will be ready by the end of spring if all goes to plan and ready for frogs! Most likely will be Dendrobates auratus "Hawaiian" or Dendrobates Galactonotus "orange" or some thumbsnail species, too many to chose from, since this is a display tank and not one of my breeding tanks it's more for show then to breed them(though they'll get busy anyway lol). I've changed the dimensions some then whats shown but this is a good idea of what it'll look like Here's the finished garage that a mess as it's turning into a frog/fish room Managed to tare out the wall today-most likely gonna have to tare out the studs and re-frame it like I need the reef tank Here the part of the wall in the living room that will house the drop off cut out-so it will look like a picture frame from the living room This will be filled with orchids, ferns, bromeliads, etc and will have a water feature with a bunch of tetras! Cameron6796
Shmexy yeah frogs has been added to list of pets to keep. I have a question regarding your frogs, what kinds do you have and have you kept dart frogs before, what do you feed them Link to comment
1.0reef
What tetras? I love tetras, plan to have 10 Cards, 5 Serpaes (Currently my favs, ver active, big, bright, and school very well!), and 10 of some other species, one i used to have was rummys, I liked them, any suggestions? I like bigger ones or thin torpedo ones like rummys.... You should get a Congo tetra actually, I want one but I'm afraid my angel and it wouldn't go well. Link to comment
nanosaurus
Yay dart frogs! I used to keep a dart frog viv before I moved. Thumbnails would be spectacular, but they may get a little lost in a viv that size. Auratus and azureus would be a lot more bold and visible, but might not make as much use of the vertical height since they prefer the ground. Galactos would do some climbing, but I recall reading they can be a little shy too (at least compared to auratus/azureus) Shmexy yeah frogs has been added to list of pets to keep. I have a question regarding your frogs, what kinds do you have and have you kept dart frogs before, what do you feed them Your staple food for most darts is going to be vitamin dusted fruit flies, with maybe some isopods (pillbugs) for variety. A few hobbyist tried experimenting with fruit fly-less diets before, but its incredibly difficult to find an alternative that outproduces fruit flies (the phrase "breed like rabbits" should be changed to "breed like fruit flies") Link to comment

Im giving myself a headache as what to put in here, I guess ill cross that bridge once this is fully planted and setup. I'm gonna try and have a forest floor look with no plants in the soil and a deep leaf litter and lots of ghost wood comming down from the top(like a huge tangle of roots)covered in smaller colorful bromiliads and orchids with so some ferns and moss. I have fruit flies , 4 types of iso's and spring tails. But fruit flies are the main diet of the frogs Dayum, if I weren't doing fish...this is what I would be doing... Do both like me lol when i wasn't in to mangroves you made a thread and BOOM i suddenly like mangroves. now you make a thread about your vivarium build, and now i want one. stop. making. cool. things. Nocturnal
I had a few small vivariums setup with various day geckos a long time ago. I've always wanted to do another one but make it really big this time. My Grandis Days learned to stay away from the fire-belly toads after a while. I don't think they tasted very good. I love poison dart frogs but I feel they would get lost in a large display. Since you are an amphibian guy, do you visit any of the reptile shows on the east coast? I worked with my dad for maybe 8 years doing the shows and he still runs the circuit. Link to comment
DRLOVEtoreef
yes my friend, you do have a problem, but, a freaking awesome one that you need to nurture with more projects!! Link to comment
patrickbruno91
That is going to be awesome. Will the drop off section be filled with a small amount of water? Maybe you can have it as a little ponding basin at the bottom and have it filter below and come back to the top end and have a small waterfall that runs down a stream into the bottom large pond area. Just a random thought. Link to comment

nanosaurus
Fruit flies... Now that may be a game changer don't they escape and get in your house ewww I never had any escapees (that I noticed) from the plastic cups you use to breed them, but once in a blue moon I would spot one that somehow found its way out of the viv, despite all the fruit fly proofing mods I made . A big part of creating a new vivarium tank is making sure each and every possible escape route is sealed, and using bug net mesh to coat vents. Link to comment

IIRC the gene that renders fruit flies "flightless" is recessive so if anything the bigger fear is a wild fly getting IN. I miss my lizards, but I definitely don't miss the days of having random crickets running around my house. In the store we wound up employing some Tokay gheckos to roam the place and pick off the escapees. That reminds me of the time I filled my buddy's coat pockets full of crickets before we closed for the night...good times. Link to comment
