Hi all, i'm a newbie here.

Been into the salt for 2yrs but still have no clue how to maintain the softy. :( So I set up a pico tank with limited equipments! I really want to figure out what matter the softy the most and I'll try to keep it as simple as possible.

I understand each type of corals have their need in related to the environment, food source and water parameters, therefore I am seeking advises from all of you experts which area I should focus on it in this case???!!

Settings:

  1. 1.5G tank
  2. Internal filter
  3. DIY LED Lighting 10W

    1x 1w 395nm violet

    1x 1w 420nm violet

    4x 1w 450nm blue

    1x 1w 3000k white

    2x 1w 10000k white

    1x 1w green

  4. 2lb live rock (been placed in the mature refegium for 2weeks and cleaned it before I put into the pico)

  5. 1.5cm thick sand bed

I used the water from the old tank to start with and let it cycling for one week. Then I water changed with RO/DI mixed in RC reef salt.

These corals are moving from my old tank and they are not in good shape as you can see from the pictures.

Water parameter tested on 29 Oct 13:

  • Temperature: 27℃
  • Salinity: 1.025
  • PH: 8.2 (API)
  • Kh: 7.7 (salifert)
  • Alkalinity: 2.73 (salifert)
  • Ca: 380 (API)
  • NO2: 0 (API)
  • NO3: 80 (API)
  • PO4: 0.1 (API)

Any suggestion to deal with the figures in RED?

What is the best way to reduce No3 in tis case???

As for the Ca, I think I will dose Seachem reef calcium to raise it. Any recommendation?

I welcome to any advice and ideas in this project!

For a tank that size just do several small water changes to get the nitrates down. You can just keep a 5 gallon bucket of water constantly circulating and every day or two take a cup, scoop some water out of the tank and refill it from the bucket.

First off, sweet looking little tank !!! Second, for the phosphates if purigen doesn't work, try Seachem's PhosOut,I've used it on my brother n laws 15 and it worked. As for the calcium, try switching salts maybe ? Me personally I don't like to dose on my nano's I've had previously because you can easily overdose. Once again my brother n law uses Red Sea Coral Pro salt, and his calcium stays at and around 400-410.

Thank you guys! Learn a lot!

I think WC seems like the best option so far since this is a new establish tank. I wanna give a time to build up the cycling itself.

Btw, how to use the phosout in such a small tank? just wrap it up and leave it in the tank OR does it need a reactor like the BioPellets?

I put the PhosOut in a media bag with carbon and mixed it up really good. Phosphates went from barley detectable to not within 2 days.

It could be the filter too, maybe try a hang on back filter ? Something that gives you more room to run better media.

Thank you. I'll never claim to be an advanced reefer, but I'll try and help if I can !!

Another not,I'm not a huge fan of softies.. But this tank looks awesome !!! If you don't mind me asking, where did you source the led's from ? And do you have any pictures of the light itself ?

Honestly I'm really appreciated with your help! love ppl sharing their experience

As you may noticed that I am not in US, I actually coming from far East Hong Kong. The LEd is sourced directly from the factory in China. They are not CREE, so they are comparatively cheap :P

I'll take picture of the light when i got home tonight ;)

A little update

Anyone help! i'm not good at chemistry, can anyone tell me are the kh, Ca and Mg a little weird? i have done 500ml wc on 30 Oct, also add a little kh buffer and Ca buffer, how come the Ca. still decreasing?

I want to create a zero nutrients environment in this project, cuz' my friend will pass me some sps frag later on. So I took the advice to use Purigen to remove NO3. I stole a candy box from my daughter and transformed it into a hang on container.

All corals look pretty happy so far! :D

That's pretty interesting but I'm not sure how effective it'll be inside that. It'll be fun to see if it does work though.

Yes, that's what I'm looking for as well. But i noticed that the water looks crystal clear this morning! :o

I will definitely show the test result later.

that a tic-tac container?

Yes! that's the best i can think of :haha: and most important "it's FREE OF CHARGE" -_-

The light looks really good !!! As does the tank.

The tic-tac is awesome, lol. I could be wrong, but I'd try putting it near the outlet of your filter to get some water movement going thru the media. Or else I wouldn't see it being too productive. As ghetto as it sound,if you have any airline tubing, cut a small piece long enough to fit from the outlet of the filter and drill a hole big enough to fit the other end of the tubing in the bottom of the container to make the media kind of tumble. Almost like a mini media reactor.

wonderful tank….what do you feed, and how much do you feed?

you tic-tac container is very cool…. I'm interesting, how it does work ;)

Thanks!

I usually feed them with Spectrum reef micro feeder soak with tank water plus a few drops of Brightwell Vitamins C. I only feed twice since it set up.

Seems like the tic-tac box not doing properly. :(

Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately the filter I am using is waterfall and pretty weak though, so it's no point. I don't want to add extra electric device to such a small tank, so I'll just keep WC sometimes instead.

BTW, a quick update. a friend gave me two sps frag and some zoanthids last night. I've cut some sps and simply glued it on the rock :D , hopefully it will survive fingerscrossed
