CAD-Aqua
Hey everyone One of the coolest things that always intrigues me is simplistic reef systems. im sure we all seen the "Franken-reef" aquariums of the past. but with all the new Nano reef equipments we made this year, we decided to use one of our 100% Starfire glass 48G "Zen" series aquariums to start up a Minimalist style reef using all ofjust the bare essentials like a Protein skimmer, Media reactor and a small mechanical filter. Less is more? The 48G Minimalist reef will have No sump, no overflow, No built in the back AIO filter, no baffles for air removal, No filters in the cabinet, all of the filters are exposed in the display itself. what we have in there now: Rimless CAD Lights 48G Zen series aquarium. 36 x 18 x 18. All Starfire glass panels on front, back, 2 sides PLS-50 Pipeless nano protein skimmer NR-1 Nano Media reactor with 100ML of bio-pellets 1 Eheim Liberty filter CAD Lights 27W Pro series LED lighting system. 9pcs x 3W BridgeLux LEDs. 8500K x 5, 460NM x 3, UV x 1 20Lbs of Eco-friendly Real reef rock 20lbs of Live aragonite sand 50G of RODI water with Reef-crystals cycling now in its 3rd day. Any suggestions of what we should start with? Thanks for looking! Scott Link to comment
JLynn
Surprisingly clean, despite having the equipment cluttering up your back corner. I like the rock work, too. One question- what type of biotope will it be? Link to comment
21093r53
that skimmer really stands out Link to comment
CAD-Aqua
Thanks guys Yeah, usually the equipment is hidden into the built0in filter chambers, but for this tank, we decided to keep it right in the open exposed. hoping to actually balance the filter feeders, skimmer, reactor and possibly not using any mechanical filters. im using the return port of the NR-1 to break the water surface. trying to really remove as many things out of the system as possible. Parameters all stabilized, Water cleared up and looks great.... new pics coming later tonight. should have the first fish tomorrow. Link to comment

JLynn
Still in the air of what type of Bio-tope to do, any suggestions? If you are up for something new and unusual, a tropical pacific reef would be cool. For a reference as to what is actually in tropical pacific reefs, http://reefguide.org/indopac/index1.html is a good starting point as a loose framework, although I have noticed that their section on corals is sadly lacking and rather sparse. A google search should remedy that, though. Their section on the fish, however, is a valuable resource. Lots of colorful chromis, angelfish, and butterflyfish, though only the pygmy angels and chromis would fit in a 48g... I also found it interesting to note that there was a rather balanced mix of NPS, soft corals, stonies, and gorgonians in the pictures google images found, rather than the typical images of a vast field of stonies and not much else. Anyways, just a suggestion! Link to comment
defender.TX
I love the minimal build theme. Definitely following along. Link to comment

CAD-Aqua
Thank you guys! Those are all great recommendations. I think I'm so far leaning towards Pacific. But Maldives is just so amazing just to think about. But I wonder where I can find specific Maldives corals. Link to comment

CAD-Aqua
Ahhh, Redsea of course. definitely its up there amongst the most beautiful reefs in the world. also its much more accessible than exotic locations like Maldives. got to wait a few more days because i just got a bacterial bloom. should clear up in a little bit. JLynn
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/rsrfslopebiot.htm <---If you do decide to do the red sea, this is the URL to the series wet web media did on the biotope. And to pitch another idea, the Sea of Cortez would also be a great choice! There is a WWM article on that, too (http://www.wetwebmedia.com/tepfwgv1.htm). Link to comment
