Yesterday I was thinking about doing something very similar with a 2 liter bottle for a skimmer. I have my little Oceanic Biocube skimmer from my smaller tank days but that poor thing just doesn't keep up with the 40b.

Does yours work pretty well? My main worry is having the skimmate actually travel the tube to get to the collection container.

i think i have to lower the bottle a little bit in the water to get more skimmate, but as for it traveling down, its pretty cool, sometimes you can see a group of bubbles just shoot on through! using a distilled gallon jug to collect, have about a 1/4-1/2 inch already, but im sure i can get more... i like to feed well!

Hm I'm definitely going to have to try this then. My skimmer works off a wood stone already and I have a bottle sitting here waiting to be cut up. Sounds like I need to get this rolling!

Really i love the light. i need to swap the last two stock bulbs i have since ive already bought two ATI Blue+ and they are awesome. the fixture is great, the two ballasts controlled the bulbs in pairs right next to eachother, ie 1 did the two front and the other the two back, but the sockets for the bulbs are terminals on wires and were easily moved so i have bulbs 1&3 on one ballast and 2&4 on the other. i have an overhang on my tank as i failed to notice fishneedit has a 30" model, but after i read about the 30", i realized it uses a 24" bulb so id be losing a lot more wattage. i plan to hang the fixture eventually so the overhang wont be noticable. The fishneedit guys are great, answered every email right away.

I plan on buying another for the tank im doing at the inlaws.

Everything is looking good!

thanks! it really feels like its coming along. ive noticed a bunch of my zoas are popping up babies!

i am getting some algae showing up, but its cuz im overfeeding a certain inhabitant. *hint* shes in the top middle of latest fts 12-12. The feeder REALLY helps !!!

Thanks Tamberav! Yeah, i love that mandarin but she hides too much! I have to rescape and close off some of those routes behind the rocks. Just added a DIY rock that took WAY too long to cure so i have to rescape anyway.

I have two very very shy mandarins (my red and blue) who hide in the back most of the time unless they think I'm not watching. However, my spotted and scooter are super bold in your face personalities. My spotted is so bold he will sit on my hand sometimes when I'm messing around in the tank. Huge beggar for food. They can differ quiet a bit.

lights out for a couple days... damn dinos

Same here. Did a 2 day lights out and it just came right back. I've probably had over a week of lights out in the past month because of that.
