antsypants
Mad props to the Santa Barbara crowd! I hail from the Solvang/Santa Maria area from way back when. Do you all know if that LFS over near the Santa Maria library is still there? Went and visited it like 12 years ago and from then on, I was like: this is how a fish store should be. Wished I had run into a LFS in Santa Barbara but we all went to the zoo and the big mall instead. Bleh Hahah actually just moved up here recently for school so I'm still trying to figure the place out Only LFS around here I've been to is Atlantis Aquariums. Dyou remember the name of the store you're talking about? Link to comment

antsypants
Happy holidays, Nano Reef Here with an overdue update hehe. Nothing new to see, really, just keeping with tradition, so I figured I'd just take some shots of the existing inhabitants. I don't leave until the 4th, though, so maybe something new will make it's way into the tank... we'll see Onto the photos! Plate Slowly but surely growing. dingusplease
Nice plate! I've never kept them before - what is the basic care? I assume lower lighting from the usual placement on sand. And that's a very good looking tank I especially like the red macro (dragon's breath?) Link to comment
antsypants
Nice plate! I've never kept them before - what is the basic care? I assume lower lighting from the usual placement on sand. And that's a very good looking tank I especially like the red macro (dragon's breath?) From my experience with the common/basic green plates, they're quite hardy. I'm sure they love light as much as the next coral but many prefer them on the sand because their flesh can get cut up if kept on the rocks. I do appreciate the aesthetic as well On a side note, I've heard plates suck up alk, and my tank consistently reads lower than average alk levels... just food for thought. I do like my plate though, its very cool to watch eat for sure. Thanks for the comments! Link to comment

antsypants
Sexy Shrimp love the skirts of zoas, love these little guys but learned the hard way a few years back even with feeding them they still could not leave the zoas alone. That they most likely do. However, I've never explicitly caught them in the act, just seen a polyp missing a piece of its skirt now and then. It usually regenerates and bounces back no worse for wear though and I've had the shrimp in with zoas for over 6 months at least. Funny thing is, I've stopped target feeding pellets and the little guys appear to be fending for themselves without the need to chew on zoas continuously, leading me to believe that either an equilibrium of some sort has been established or something else is at work here. Whatever it is, I'm content with their behavior, but I am keeping a close eye. What does bother me though, is that they will finish off a dying coral even if it has a chance to come back, evidenced by the fact that they wouldn't leave a frogspawn and an acan alone after it was knocked over. I watched as they pulled bits and pieces of flesh out, leading me to isolate them. I decided to give them a second chance though and, well, fingers crossed Link to comment

antsypants
Quick and dirty FTS I took while visiting for MLK weekend. I tossed in some snails (Mexican turbo, margarita, zebra astrea) in an effort to clear out the gelidium I had which had developed a resistance to H2O2... which they did! I'm not sure who, but it was one of the 3. I'm guessing Mexican turbo. Of course, now my tank's got too many snails and most are going back except maybe the zebra astreas. Everything looks good except the duncan. Accidentally dropping the hammer on it didn't help... but otherwise, my tank's definitely maturing. Coralline growth, buds popping out from my various mini colonies; anyways, here's to a hopefully smooth year! http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9485_zps1cb5499c.jpg.html'> Link to comment

Ack, sorry to hear that I remember you having an alkalinity problem awhile back? Might have something to do with your hard corals not doing well. On the flip side, I got mine dirt cheap and its grown super well so hopefully the same thing happens to you the small sand bed makes the tank look so big! i kind of regret selling mine now. Amazing pico SirHaha yeah the shallow sand wasn't intentional, just happened over time as I vacuumed it. I like it like that though. It's a compromise between sand and no sand. I use it for the look instead of for filtration since its a small tank. There are some spots where I need to add a bit of sand though Link to comment
antsypants
Hullo, everybody Happy President's Day I've been busy so not much has changed.. I guess this thread is turning into an FTS a month type thing, sorry I had to take this quick so it's not that great, but it does show how the tank's been keeping up. I did sell the plate though, it was getting pretty big... wish I'd taken a picture of it. Anyways, got a new tank in the works, so this one might retire soon... More on that when there's more to say. Thanks for lookin' Link to comment

I was just about to head over to your thread, heh. yeah, my bam bams were looking great. then they hated my tank. maybe cause i started dosing phtyo feast for my worm? or maybe i got the stonger nano box mini tide? i don't know. i'm not a huge zoas or palys fan tbh. maybe cause they seem so mercurial. but i got a great rock with a duster and dragon eyes. i like them, and they seem okay for now. we'll see! I seem to have the same problem.. One day theyre looking great and big, the next theyve either shrunk or closed up indefinitely. Plus they're on the pretty nice sized rock in the foreground so dipping isn't as simple as if they were on plugs. I do like the look of zoas though, especially the longskirted ones which my tank for some reason can't keep. No matter how long the skirts are when I get em, after a month or two they get short and stubby I did see that picture and it looks great! RDE's are always super colorful despite their reputation as a common strain. Link to comment
