VABumpkin
Hi guys, I saw this fish pop up on DD the other day. I'm very intrigued by it and I did a little research. I know it stays under 2 inches long, and is very cryptic, LA recommends a 20+ gallon tank. It seems that most people with tanks over 20 gallons never see the fish... So what would you guys say about keeping the fish in a 5 gallon Pico? The tank I'm building ATM is gonna utilize some really intricate rock work, and will probably offer a lot of hiding places (endless possibilities with dry rock and a chisel). Do you think the tank would work comfortably for a little Geometric Hawkfish/High-fin Perchlet and still allow some nice viewing time for me? Thanks everyone. Link to comment
1.0reef
I'd saya 5-7 gallon tank with a good amount of hiding areas and open space would be a minimum tank size, and would be a very interesting species tank Link to comment
VABumpkin
I thought the same thing. I really wanted to keep a waspfish again, but my space limitations won't allow it. I think one of these little guys would be a perfect substitution. Link to comment
dtitus1
I think it would be doable if you take good care of the tank. Store near me has a few and based off what I've seen of their behavior in person i don't think it would be cramped for them. Link to comment
spazizz
Ive never seen one over 1.5 inches and they just sit there.... Not saying they don't get bigger though. If they were captive bred I would have picked one up the second I saw it. Link to comment
peasofme
you only get captive bred fish? Link to comment
Ebn
Kept one in my old 33G tank. Dropped him in there and didn't really see him again until the day I broke it down months later. It's definitely not the most active of fish, so I'm not sure if you really want to make it your centerpiece fish. Link to comment
VABumpkin
I don't really want a fish that's out all of the time being hyper. I quite enjoy quirky little cryptic fish. Link to comment
dtitus1
Just go ahead and get it man if I had a smaller tank I would in a second. Gotta have less active fish for tanks that small and I'd say the Pygmy Hawkfish should fit the bill nicely. Link to comment

I wouldn't mind it either if it actually did something. It just perch a lot even in a smaller tank once it was removed and didn't do much. The sailfin blenny had a lot more personality, but both the geometric and sailfin was way better than the flaming prawn goby. Link to comment

kalireefer
I picked one up about a month ago and have it as the only fish in my 10 gallon mixed reef. Very cryptic yes, but perches in plain sight every one in a while. Also very active hunting for pods in the dawn and dusk hours. Try one out, I rarely see them in my LFS so i thought it would a good fish to grab. Link to comment
1.0reef
They are from a bit deeper water, maybe a bluer lower power light could show it's activities during the day? Link to comment
VABumpkin
a sunrise sunset function should allow some good observation time when it's out hunting right? Link to comment
kalireefer
to get my pygmy hawk out to show my friends when hes hiding, I take a a chunk of chaeto out of my fuge and shake it in the display. He can't resist the avalanche of amphipods and copepods. They are from a bit deeper water, maybe a bluer lower power light could show it's activities during the day? Good call. I have a kessil A150w Ocean blue over the 10 gal and its pretty bright, He resides in the more shaded areas. Link to comment

Tamberav
ugh this is killing me!!! if someone buys that little cutie before I have my tank up I will be very sad. Just keep an eye on DD and hop on LA's and bluezoo's alert list. There will be another eventually. When I saw it on DD... I thought the same thing.. how it would go good in a 5g. Link to comment
1.0reef
IMO a swissguard or similar basslet or helfrichi firefish would be cool with it. Link to comment
VABumpkin
i'm only gonna have one fish. two in that small of a tank would be radicchio. Link to comment
kalireefer
Still have my pygmy hawk, he finally has grown some balls and is seen more frequently perching on rocks around the tank. Feeding at night has helped him receive more food while my other inhabitants are less active... just a tip Link to comment
