picoreef78
I know having technical difficulties. I should just move to Flkr but just to lazy. Quote Link to comment
picoreef78
Just checked my water parameter. Alk 3.08 mEq/l, Ca 450 mg/l, Mg 1410 mg/l Sr up tp 16 mg/l. Seeing that strontium was low I checks some other trace elements with the Red Sea I, K and Fe kits, low. K used the whole 0.5 ml titration so I gave it 320 mg/l, Fe was 0. Iodine was normal at 0.06 mg/l. Somehow chewing through trace elements while the major three are stable with only water changes. :/ Quote Link to comment
picoreef78
I took out affected rocks, scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush rinsed with RODI and applied 3% H2O2 spray, lets sit for 5 minutes rinse and back into tank. About 70-80% treated areas are turning white. I might have to do this every 3-4 days until algae is gone. I also pick up KZ Meerwasser Komplex Concentrate. It was on sale when I got the RMS. I will dose the 1 ml/50g regiment and recheck my trace elements in a week. Hopefully I can keep them near seawater levels. I guess I should just get onto Flickr so I can better post pictures. TheKleinReef
that algae is really dense on that one rock, could that rock be leaching something? aside from that, you have a nice collection of SPS! Quote Link to comment
picoreef78
Maybe. It is BRS Pukani dry rock. I think it is Bryopsis corticulans that hitchhiked in on a frag and I let it go, now paying the price. Outcompeting coraline algae. 1 Quote Link to comment
TheKleinReef
any progress on battling it? Quote Link to comment
picoreef78
Todays picture as white algae. I may need to do a few applications. Last time I had Bryopsis pennata in my old tank. Did rock H2O2 dips and it took care of it. I worry that SPS are more sensitive to H2O2. Quote Link to comment

I dipped frags in a H2O2 solution. i think it was 20:80 (h2o2:water) and they browned out pretty rapidly, but always bounced back. and it took care of the algae on the plugs. 1 Quote Link to comment

picoreef78
Testing alk (low at 2.85, Ca at 400 (down from 450) Mg high 1500 per Salifert and 1360 per RS. Mostly stable, finally seeing a drop in alk and Ca, lots of coraline algae growth, no so much SPS, and the LPS seem to be doing great. NO3 at 0.50 and PO4 at 0, Yay. A lot less algal growth except for a few patches of bryopsis I plan to spot treat with H2O2. 5 minute H2O2 spray seemed to have done an awesome job. I needed about three treatments which due to some constraints accused about once a week. Testing trace elements RS Iron and Potassium are really low. Salifert Strontium also really low. Goal is to have then as sea water levels, I was hoping the religious weekly 10-20% water changes would keep them at goal. I really don't know the benefit, may if I boost them I will see better growth. Giving 2 ml/day acropower, three drops of coral vitlizer, 3 days a week an hour feeding of Reef chili, reef roids, oyster feast and 1 day a week of phytoplankton Hopefully growth will start to take off. TheKleinReef
i wouldn't stress too much over the iron/iodine tests. most of them aren't that accurate and the elements can be replenished easily with proper water changes. and i've heard mixed things about the salifert K+ test kit. some people like it, others don't. I use the Red Sea kit, it's rather tedious but I've gotten used to it. Since you are keeping a fair amount of SPS, keeping your K+ in line is important. Giving 2 ml/day acropower, three drops of coral vitlizer, 3 days a week an hour feeding of Reef chili, reef roids, oyster feast and 1 day a week of phytoplankton Hopefully growth will start to take off. YESSS FOOOOD! Quote Link to comment
picoreef78
I am using the red sea tests as well. alk has been pretty stable with water changes. just now adding 5g buffer/week. Will dose Ca to goal of 420. Have been giving KZ Meerwasser 2ml/day as directed no no testable bump in trace elements. Quote Link to comment
picoreef78
Going to do big 10 gallon water change today (20%). Recheck 1 hour after change see my values. My Salinity has been a little low 33 ppt 1.026 as the hydrometer swings. So mixed to 38 ppt to get up to 35 ppt goal. I have been working on an experiment checking with both Red Sea and Salifert test kits. Have an n of 10 but so far the test are comparable to about 10 mg/l, mEq/l over multiple tests. Mg has had the biggest difference so far. Will run a Fisher student test once I have a bigger n. I ordered the 120 degree TIR lenses. Will get those in before my next call block, hopefully. Running at 55% G2 Radion Pro, once I get them in how aggressively would I bump up output? To 100%? GARF bonsai seems to have flatworms, I see a chomped on area, no evidence of worms yet though. Inspection of the other corals with no evidence of damage, will dip in revive during water change. Quote Link to comment
