Hi all, thanks for all your help and information. I had a stressful last year because my husband died of illness 6/1/2012 and I started this tank Feb 23- I wanted a hobby that I could become engrossed in, and wanted to learn and be challenged, just didn't know I had an addictive personality when it came to this so far- researching, buying, putting hands in tank way too many times. Aqueon Evo 8 w/ Ledtric Par38 PLUs with 120 optics, Hydor Koralia 240, updated pump. Can't show all pics, at that time was taking pics in wrong setting so too big. FEB 23, started w/ 2 live rocks and like 5 lbs livesand MARCH Purchased my first 2 corals which were zoas, Whammin Watermelons and Radioactive Dragon Eyes. Found first hithchikers- bivalve, zoa, mini feather duster, a couple snails and brittle star, later bristle worm. APRIL Bought first fish, may he rest in peace- was a clownsfish. Bought acans, red & blue mushrooms, hermit crabs and shells. Bought Slim, my wonderful Tailspot Blenny. Discovered Red mushroom can be REALLY unhappy after a waterchange.

Finally we're in June. A year later. Hoped to have a great beach vacation in Charleston, SC- rain 5 of 5 days. 2 days I got 4 hrs a piece of some sun (and the accompanied burn). I need to rub up against a good tree right now as my back is itching!!! Went to Charleston's Aquarium- overpriced but still saw a couple cool things.

As far as JUNE events for my tank I acquired a rock flower anemone, 4 sps, a duncan, 2 ricordea.

Getting crowded in here.

And then some more rearranging after some acclimation.

Did a dumb thing though, I put the sps on the bottom, I had the light on the timer but guess what???? I didn't PLUG it in. SO no light at all for 4 days. My tailspot was laying next to the glass in the gsp all striped w/ stress, I thought he croaked but he was alive and kicking in a few mins.

Oh, one more thing- I think someone found something like this off the coast of TX but it was thick like a rhodactis mushroom but had some tentacles. I just took it out to take a pic and put it back in the little pool it was in at Folly Beach, SC. And Folly Beach varied in gravity- from 1.024- 1.026 w/ the refractometer among 2 different days. Yeah, I brought it with me. I was curious now. Mother Nature's doing just fine.

Finally, the most update pic a few minutes ago of my tank. My nitrates hover btw 5-10, constantly working on that, the acans, dendro and duncan are always hungry. And it's hard to make mysis stay in one spot.

I had one aptasia but it was easy because it was on a small rock that I didn't have glued anywhere and no coral was on it so I poured scalding water on it. I did have to dip my 2 zoas but they're good now. I have a full house. Now just have to watch it all grow in and keep it clean while I'm researching for my 20L to start Jan 1st. Have already the tank, AC70 and plan on going bigger w/ a VortechMP10 and Kessil A150, maybe a sky blue and ocean blue mix.

HITCHHIKERS
1 bivalve
brittle star
2 bristle worm
1 peanut worm
2 stomatella
3-4 colonista

SNAILS
2Astrea
5 Dwarf Cerith

2 Zebra Hermit Crabs
2 Blue-legged hermit crabs

CORALS

Red Mushroom
Blue Mushroom
Superman Rhodactis

Whammin' Watermelon
Radioactive Dragon Eyes
Green Star Polyp

Cherry Charm Paly
Vivids Rainbow Paly

Red, neon green blasto
Dendro- NPS
Goniopora

Supernova Acan
Acid Rain Acan
Blues2Go Acan
Mystery Acan

Superman on Steroids Chalice

2 ricordea
- 4 sps
- duncan
- rock anemone

Thanks again everybody, so much, I'm having fun and most of the time it seems if 4 of 5 opinions are leaning one way, that's the way to go. I'll do things along the way now that I've started.

Ok, I did that quickly but can someone tell me how do you attach this to your signature??

well i used to know how to attached a link to a word but i forgot. tho if you want to add it to your signature like mine. Click your username on the top-right corner and go to your profile. On that page click "Edit My Profile". And on the next page click Signature on the left column, and there you can attached the link to this thread! :)

Everything is looking great in here! I'm glad this tank is coming along well, it's nice to finally see some pictures. As far as the mushroom you found at folley beach, kind of cool! Not really too sure what it was.

Where did you get your liverock? If it was at Shawn's, everything in her tanks are riddled with aptasia. Great liverock other than that but definitely a pain to deal with. There is another pet store a ways down Hendersonville rd called exotic pets I think, they do have some corals and stuff but it's a little rougher looking store. Also found one out in black mountain that was kind of the same way, they had a beautiful display tank but their tank systems for everything else didn't look very well cared for.

Thanks for the compliment Inglostsurfer. It was at your urging that I finally got my stuff together to get a thread going. All LR came from Shawn's. Only 1 aptasia thank God. But yeah, I noticed they're in her tanks and they are getting progressivley bigger, so then it doesn't appear that she or anyone else that helps her is making attempts to eradicate it. Another reason why I've bought online for 98% of my corals. Even her newest display w/ zoas galore has them. I just don't get it.

2 new pics. Because I can't get the light higher, it's 9 inches from the lid, I have a piece of plastic canvas on top to help difuse some of the light. And a closeup one of my gsp.

Thanks Gena, I don't know where to start to compliment you on your tank and upcoming tank in constant diy motion. I know I have already but damn girl!!! So many kudos to you, your macros are insane, everything looks so natural and belongs and just looks wicked. I'm sure I'll end up moving any faster growers I have here into the 20L after the new year. Saving money for lights right now. Want to get more rock flower anemones- I'm hooked. Learning about the 4 sps I have. Hope they do well so I can transfer them over later. Your tank is inspiring, as well as Randi's. You girls got it goin' on!

I tried following Gena's thread for about the first 3 days but EVERYTHING in my notifications was for her post, I couldn't keep up! Definitely looking forward to hers, really impressive setup. It shouldn't be any time before that 20L is setup for you, it will be a fun project. And the GSP looks great, that's one thing that Shawn has an awesome mother colony of. My tank is really starting to clear up now after the water change, there's still hope! Haha. Hope those SPS are still doing well, you'll have to keep some progression/growth shots.

What lights are you thinking about for the 20L build in the future? Oh and I really like the way the rockwork looks in your tank, I hadn't noticed it before. I was too focused on your awesome closeups haha

Awe, thanks  Randi is the one with all the awesome macros. I don't really have any right now. She's going to be sending me some though...yay :D

Rock flowers are gorgeous. I'm sure I'll end up getting one for my fuge.

Thinking of a Sky Blue and Ocean Blue Kessil A150- a combo. For me the ocean blue would be too blue but maybe Sky Blue would not be blue enough- wish I knew someone that I could see that combo face to face. Maybe I would like 2 sky blue? I've checked youtube videos. hard to say. They look sleek, are small, don't have to hang high above a tank, and have the most beautiful shimmer I've seen and I could imagine looking at a sun speckled reef doing that. I would need no deep par value for the height of the 20L, I'd put them fairly close together so the color would mesh. Mainly lps again and if the sps turn out here I'd move them to the top of the 20L.

I'm not sure what the spread is like on the A150s or the more powerful 350s. However the smaller ones aren't dimmable and the 350s are, maybe you could consider running one 350 if the spread is long enough to cover the 20L tank, then you could adjust the light a lot better based on your corals. The 20L tank is 30", right?

yeah, the dimensions 30.75"L x 12.5"W x 13"H- This is what it said on their site.

A350W: 24" surface radius by 3' penetration (on average)- I assume this would be the one- oh, and I saw a pic of it on their website with the gooseneck. But in looking on youtube I saw one person have one over a 50 gal tank which was like 39 inches long and it covered it all.

So looking at it the A350W w/ gooseneck it would be cheaper by like $150 and dimmable. I don't know what cords I'd need to go with that but still will be cheaper getting 1 cord than 2. Definitely a possibility. With the money saved I could put that towards whatever I buy for circulation.

If you aren't stuck on just doing a pendant, the reefbreeders photon looks like a really cool fixture that's fully programmable. (sunrise/sunset/theworks). That would give you more full spectrum, although I don't really know that it helps much other than making certain coral colors "pop" a bit more. I would definitely keep an open mind to as many options as you can since you have plenty of time to get everything together for this build.

Are you planning on doing a sump at all or will you just be doing a hang on back filter? Not much experience with return pumps since I've never ran a sump but I would suggest some sort of wavemaker (MP10 is NOT the only brand out there even though it's the one everyone has) There are several other companies that have wavemaker controllers that are compatible with their pumps, I know tunze has one as well as korallia to my knowledge.

Link to comment

I can't hang it or anything but if anybody had a suggestion for a tank mount that would be great for that 20L. And I'm sure it would be cheaper than the A350. I did hear Reefbreaders say they would have a tank mount soon so if/when that might be a possibility as well.

Nothing too exciting right now except one of my sps has definitely differentiated itselt as yellow and I have to give it some more time as it's only been in the tank since June 1st and some edges have that yellow/green thing going. Another looks like it's going from the reddish brown to green. The 3rd looks like the brown has turned to pinkish red. The last one still hasn't done much but get a little lighter.

Am going to Lowes tomorrow to get some crate to make first compartment more efficient. Plexiglass separating 1st chamber is not giving enough flow and it'll be easier to house the media (purigen or chemipure elite) and floss on top. I probably should have done it before I stocked the tank cuz I will have to drill holes through the first chamber for flow.

3 gallon water change yesterday as nitrates were like 7-8.

Today tests:

ph 8.1-8.2

KH 11

NO3 5

phosphate zero

Never have problems w/ calcium, always in range with Reef Crystals. Won't test for anything else unless given reason to.

Hey, my SPS are finally coloring after receiving them 6/1, then the lights were out for 5 days in error and they were brown when I returned- since then slowly they're coming around. I'm not glueing them though because I'll get them in that 20L down the line and worry about whatever hopefully won't go wrong in the little nano. The short stubby is finally turning dark green or turquoise. And the other is yellowing nicely. I think the one on the left will remain pink and the furthest to the right I'm not sure, currently it's light pink w/ tiny yellow barely fuzzy dots.
