If you have Lightroom, you can add some Fill Light while bumping up the constrast or Black Level to get a much better picture. If you want to do it outside of Lightroom, just set your Exposure Compensation to +0.3 or +0.7.

The tank is really looking sharp. The photo gives sort of an evening feel (which isn't necessarily bad). However, I'd still play with the white balance to see what you get. My guess is that your eyes don't see everything quite as blue as the picture suggests.

Use something white to help set the white balance (could be a large PVC fitting in the tank, or just a sheet of paper placed outside the tank that is lit by the tank lights); I have used a small white cutting board in the tank. It's convenient, but don't use the sand to adjust the white balance (as sand isn't typically pure white and it will throw off the hue).

So with the 40mm macro what aperture are you shooting most shots? flickr isn't showing the exif data for that when I looked. The bass tuner pic would probably have a little better effect with a larger DOF. Maybe a bit brighter aswell but that could be my monitor so I hesitate to give any advice on stuff like that as this laptop is a POS.

Dog pic could benefit from aditional clarity, sharpness, and contrast as it is a bit flat. DOF is a bit shallow as well the ears are usually pretty interesting to keep in focus.

Not sure if you were lookin for any critique-y type comments, just givin my thoughts.

that's why i started this thread. to get some feedback.

i'm not exactly sure on the aperture, i was just tinkering with it. (no tripod/timers or anything). i'll probably start paying more attention.

the dog pic was in horrible lighting, so not much i could do there, i tried tinkering with contrast, clarity, and sharpness but i couldn't get it to come out right so i just left it.

word, are you shooting on raw or jpeg? I highly recommend only shooting in raw for the 1 or 2 stop exposure freedom it gives you along with tons of other benefits if it wasn't.

Do you have a custom white balance in camera? I snap a pic, set custom white balance to that, snap another pic, set custom white balance to the new pic, etc. After 3-4 shots white balance is perfect. It's a down/dirty trick over the white or grey card, but it works.

Photoshop, right? Levels adjustment layer: Drag the white and black sliders to the first bumps in the histogram. Sometimes just a little past if the white highlight or black lowlights look good. Add a curves adjustment layer: make and move a 3/4 point lighter or darker to control shadow tones. Make/move anotehr point 2/3 or so to recapture the highlight tones. You should be 85-95% final with these 2 simple tonal adjustments.

i will get some up! just need to dig through my albums to see what's worth sharing (they're mostly shots from my track meets, and other random stuff). living in pure suburbia doesn't help either. i can't get any landscape shots at all. :/ but Springfest at my college is happening this weekend so i'm gonna walk around and see what i can get.

I like the picture of Enzo.

thanks! the only thing that kills it is the nice brown box/tv/table in the background that i left in the living room after moving back home... i was to excited when the camera arrived to move it/ move to a different spot. haha :D
