risk1994
I've had an ocellaris for 7 months with no issues. Recently his swimming has become sort of 'twitchy' hard to explain but hes definitely not his normal self. Sometimes he'll sort of curl into a 'U' shape and swim sideways near a rock or something for a few seconds. I dont see him scratching or flashing though and he doesnt actually twich, just that his swimming is sort of twitchy. I noticed these spots between his second and third stripe recently also. He has them on both sides. Not sure if this is evidence of a problem. The clear part of his fins seem spot free. He eats fine just like always. Hes been very hardy for me...even survived huricane sandy with some 59degree water days. temp is 79, 0 for amm/trite. nitrates are almost unreadable. PH has been very consistent 8.2-8.3. I've had a very hard time keeping alk and cal at high levels but this hasnt affected PH in any way. salinity is 1.023 - 1.024 He is the only fish in this tank. Any idea what this could be? yoshii
Does he swim in that frogspawn coral? If so, sometimes when clowns take to Euphyllia, it can leave black spots on their body (harmless) Link to comment
risk1994
He sleeps in it all night long and swims in it probably 40-50% of the day. Link to comment
jadedanime
That would be what's doing it. Link to comment
risk1994
Funny I've never heard of this. Now I'm reading about this hyper-melanization from getting stung. I have yet to ever see the sweepers from the frog, Perhaps theyre coming out at night and stinging him? Should I bring him back to LFS? Heres what he looked like 3 months ago. Link to comment
Lalani
What yoshii said, its fine. The frogspawn can't hurt the clown. Link to comment
jadedanime
As long as your clown is healthy, he will be fine. Don't worry, clowns are dumb enough to get stung sure, but that means they are hardy. If it would kill them then evolution would have favored them to run away from the coral, not still be attracted to them. Link to comment
sfdanksta650
My OC is the same!! Lol. It's from getting stung. My OC sleeps in zoo's and his lips are black and his body is black in several places.I just think he's got some pain fetish going on. My clown tiwches too. I have read on NR some where that its the male submitting / courting to female. Do you have another clown? Link to comment
jgpico
I have a few occelaris clowns and have kept a few pairs in the past as well and as the others have said its mainly from them getting stung but I have also noticed that its starts happening when they get older and darken up a bit. The spots tend to go away but the skin becomes darker and kind of covers some of the spots. this is a pic of my sccelaris. http://s1177.photobucket.com/user/Stisuba006/media/IMAG0125_zps59e9401b.jpg.html'> Link to comment
risk1994
Do you have another clown? Nope, 6g tank, he's the only fish that's ever been in there. Hopefully the twitchiness isn't the sign of some issue. He does eat well so I'm optimistic. Although yours looks a lot like mine. Thanks for the pic, I feel better now Link to comment
risk1994
Well its been 2yrs now so thought it might be a good time for an update... Here he is when I got him in sept 2012.... Here he is today..He's turning into an onyx! He's been in the same frogspawn the whole time. Almost 3yrs old now. Not bad for a first time reefer in a 5g nano! Link to comment
