this thing just keeps throwing it's mantle out farther.. I assume this is healthy looking?

So far so good!!!

That's good to hear :)

It's my new favorite thing. Lol.

I noticed it doesn't get bothered by touching frogspawn..

So having that hole open a tar isnt gaping?

nope, its not gaping. That is a healthy opening for sure, especially in a Crocea which often hold themselves slightly open.

  • 8 months later...

just an update on this little crocea.. it survived my tank upgrade and seems even happier in the new tank. I have it a little higher up in the tank and it seems to be darkening up to more of a purple color.. also, she got a little buddy..

initially I was concerned with the mouth being open, but now her inhalent siphon is nearly always shut, or at least nearly shut.. the clam got darker in the new tank, it's higher up in the tank closer to the light, but the light is also turned down, so we'll see what happens when I start running it a little higher..

my new maxima is showing a little bit of gaping of the inhalent siphon, but is responsive to changes in light and otherwise appears healthy. my guess is stress from shipping, then being moved around too much by me.. she was looking much better yesterday than the day before, and better this morning than yesterday..

Clams look Awesome!!! Croceas are more sensitive than ALL other clams, so if theres anythng wrong with your tank the Croc's will show it first, before the maximas. Keep up the good work!!!

so I'm curious, I've been trying to find some info online.. My crocea is quite a bit darker than when I got it, is it going to keep getting darker as I turn my lights up? I'm only maxing around 40% right now and plan to take it up a bit further.. Just curious what your experience is with increasing light intensity..

Yes!! Croceas like more light than Maximas. I have actually burned holes in maxima clams with halides, but the croceas BASK in it. :)
