Can you have a couple LPS or SPS without dosing in 28 g.?

I have a 28 g. cube with 24 lbs. of live rock and only rock and floss for filtration. I have softies, 2 rbta, one 3-head frogspawn and 4 small fish. I only do what changes (5-6 gallons) every 2-3 weeks. I don't do any dosing and don't plan to in order to keep my tank relatively simple and inexpensive to run.

 

If I had a pink birdsnest (sps) for the top of the tank and some candy cane corals (lps), are they going to strip a lot of good nutrients from the tank so I'll then need to dose?

 

Do either Candy Cane or Pink Birdsnest pull out more nutrients than the other?

 

Any suggestions for me.

I have a 30 gallon FULL of LPS and I never dose. 2 5 gallon water changes a week keep my levels just fine.

Listen to Lawman and you wont' go wrong. I never dose on my 20 just 20 percent water change 7-10 days.

Dosing can lead to many bad things.

Proud to say ive never dosed and i hardly test anything. Ive made a few nice systems this way.

Unlike the others, I have mostly SPS corals. And they consume a lot, especially Alk and Calcium to an extent. I may dose 30 to 40 ml of Alk a day. And I do test mainly because I don't want any Alk swings which can be bad for SPS corals.

 

LPS and Softies are more for forgiving of lower levels of alk and calcium.

what he said, you can get away with out dosing if you have a few sps but once they get bigger or you add more then they really start sucking up the alk and ca.

With only a few SPS you might be okay without dosing if you use a high ALK and Calcium salt like red sea coral pro.

The other thing that sucks up alk and calk like crazy is coralline algae.

+1 I never had to dose with a few SPS and LPS when I used Ocenaic salt and Salinity salt. When those SPS frags grow into colonies is when you will have problems.

interesting about not having to dose. Have you loss any coral, I ask because I feel like loss a couple due to lack of nutrients and low salinity

If you have corals dying you are likely out of wack with one or more parameters and also possibly having swings in the tank. If you do not test you don't know what's going on in the tank. And not dosing with a fair amount of coral proportional to the size of the tank and the amount/frequency of the water changes is also not advised. So it would be better if you did test. This includes salinity. And then dose accordingly.
