Fluval Edge - Powehead Placement

So I've been mulling this over for a while now, and rather than continually adjusting the placement of the powerhead and using my own guess-work, I'll just come out and ask:

With a tank configuration like this, where would be the optimum placement of my powerhead? Running a 6 gallon with a Hydor Koralia Nano 240gph. I've seen some people running 2 powerheads in this exact tank, but I'm guessing that would be overkill.

or...

I know my aquascape isn't exactly pretty, but with the live rock I have it's the best I could do. For the record, there's a nice cave in the middle of the tank with a large opening in the back, which isn't visible in these pictures. I'll also be adjusting it slightly once I get some frags in there.

As always, thanks for the help :)

Man... another noob with a fluval edge. When will the madness stop?

Caves = detritus trap. Space your hunks of LR so that water flows around them regardless of where you put the powerhead.

One last thing... Why so much sand?

This tank is little more than a glass enclosure with all other equipment bought and upgraded elsewhere. What's so terrible about a glass enclosure that it warrants "madness"? Admittedly, the small opening in the top can be troublesome, but that's about it. And yes, the look of the tank factored into my decision to purchase, but I see that as a reasonable consideration when everything else (HOB, lighting, filtration, etc) can be upgraded to be on par with any other tank.

It's only 1.5" sand, not for any particular reason other than aesthetics and the fact that it isn't detracting from anything else. From what I've read, I'd prefer a slightly deep sand bed.

Well when you have it up and running for a year or two you'll know what I'm talking about in terms of madness. Heck, last I knew Hagen recommended the Edge NOT to be used for salt water and it was printed right on the side of the box.

Basically that much sand is a HUGE detritus trap in a tank that small. Stir it regularly and get a ton of sand sifting snails or you'll definitely run into nitrate/phosphate/algae issues in the future.

You are right about it all coming down to ascetics. That's why I personally like the look of a very minimalistic, rimless tank with a black overflow wall to attract my attention to whats in my tank and not the tank itself.

I know this is an old thread. But 1.5 inch sand bed is a bad thing? How much should I add? My live sand will be here in the morning.

Not bad per say but easier to manage a shallow bed long term. I run 0.5 inches, just enough to cover.

I run deeper if the livestock prefer it such as wrasse's that sleep in the sand or jawfish.
