My BC14 . . .

Hello all . . .

I've been using this forum to great advantage in my pursuit of starting a nano reef tank and thought I should finally start my own thread.

I will post better tank shots as I am able. Basically the gist of my tank is this:

BC 14 started end of April 2012

14 lbs FLA base rock
10 lbs live sand

Stock return pump
Koralia 240 ph

Modified rear chambers per the usual:
chamber 1 - 50 w heater, knocked out false floor, tab taken out for more flow
chamber 2 - inTank media basket with floss/purigem/chemipure elite
chamber 3 - stock pump

Stock lighting with pc Actinics, pc 10000 daylight and 1 3 LED blue strip.
Ordered a 50/50 pc to take the place of the 10000 daylight. Like the bluer tint a little more.

CUC - from Reef Cleaners and reefs2go
hermits, snails all doing a great job keeping the tank clean.

2 false clowns that I had since march in a previous jelly tank (since sold, thank god)
Pep shrimp to help battle a small aiptasia breakout. Pep won the battle.

2 head frogspawn
3 head silver xenia
1 mushroom
1 zo rock with 100+ polyps (gotta say, I got it for a steal, $39)

That's pretty much it for now. I made a few noob blunders as I started and lost some coral but learned from those mistakes.

Thanks for all the help out there!

Sorry for the sideways tank shot. Not sure why it's like that.

Anyway, early shot of tank, post cycle. It has since changed a little.

Rock on the upper right, foreground, has been removed and now

the green zo's are in that spot. Will post a better pic when I can. W-

A more recent FTS. Added a few corals and dosed chemi clean for a cyano outbreak. Worked well. As of this post, the cyano on the sand bed is also gone. W-

Tank is stabilizing pretty well. All params good. Here are before and after shots in my fight with the cyano.

I dosed 1 time with chemiclean 2 weeks ago. Weekly 10% water changes every Friday or Saturday.

Sorry for the not so great iPhone pics. Thanks for looking. W-

Looks good, I like you're rock scape a lot. Did you order a CUC package from Reefcleaners or do your own individual numbers?

Thanks! It's come a long way from when it started in April. :) W-

Thanks! Yes, I ordered a CUC from John at reefcleaners.org. I ordered one meant for a smaller sized tank after hearing about how he always throws in extras! :) The dwarf ceriths have multiplied!!! The nerite's do a killer job keeping the back and glass super clean! Pretty amazing.

What LFS are you using?

Using DNA and Exotic Aquatics. Both are really good and you can find good deals on frags.

That 100 plus zoa colony was a steal at $39 at Exotic Aquatics. It's probably 120+ polyps now. W-

Any plans on upgrading the lighting?

No plans yet. But you never know. I did replace the 10000 daylight bulb with a 50/50.

I like the bluer look a lot more than the bright yellow/white look. Personal preference. W-

Close up of the candy cane and the maxima. You can see the xenia in the background. The xenia used to be on 1 plug and slowly (well, not really) started to migrate off the plug to the rock. I actually like it as it adds great movement to the upper level of the scape. I'll be fragging it I'm sure down the road. W-

I may be wrong but I believe the maxima needs stronger lights. Stock PC lights are too weak and will slowly died in a few months. That's what I've always read. Great job so far!

FTS 9/8/12

Most recent additions:

Devils Hand Leather

Green Toadstool Leather (polyps were out, now has a slime layer and polyps in)

Yellow Polyps

Rainbow Florida Ric

Miami 'Vice' Zoa's

Everything else doing well.

Xenia is a bit picky. Some open, some not. Oh well.

Thanks for looking.

Here ya go.

FTS 12/19/12

with actinics on.

As with all reefs, this is ever changing. :)

I like where it's going and try to keep my hands out of the tank.

The torch is on the right side and not fully visible from the front.

Green toadstool leather is angry right now and slumped over. Should come around.

You can sit at my bar and see the right side of the tank.

And a shot of the torch.

Gets bigger when the day lights come on.
