I still think we could have smuggled coral through the airport's security checkpoint. But you were all "That's a federal offence" and junk.

On another fighting note... The Blenny is super jelous of the Flameback. The Flameback has been following the Sixline around getting a feel for the tank which is what the Blenny always did. Blenny watches from his bunker with a look of disdain on his face.

Either that, or I'm misinterpeting the frown that is permanently etched upon his face. Blenny is all show though, he's no longer trying to posture at the Flameback unless it comes within a couple inches of his bunker. That was after a couple of hours of trying to establish the entire tank as his territory.

All things considered, as long as the Flameback dosn't go after coral he should fit right in. :happydance:

Oh, ok Mr. "Calcium carbonate skeleton"...your scamming ways are going to catch up with you soon!

Seriously, Pinner is a stand-up gent whose attempt to do me a solid was thrwarted when USPS lost the package.

Video was cute, your commentary was funny. What was that super bright orange coral? New fishy looks happy.

Umm the ones I think were the orangest are a little Jawbreaker mushie nestled in with the Favia and My Setosa up by the Blastos/Blenny Bunker. I also have a Red Monti cap in the sandbed that isn't so red yet plus the War coral is down there.

Apparently it's time for an update to the thread... Lemme do a waterchage in a few and I'll try and get a proper update posted.

Evan! It's been pushing t-shirt weather out here for weeks! Should be able to ship easier again soon.

The postal guy asked and I told him exactly what was in the package.

Snow is disappering quick tho.

I know! DC was BRUTALLY cold last week, but snow is going away fast here too. I need to get back out there a few more times, but my travel schedule is just exploding right now!

Morning everyone!

Here is my March update... It's been a busy month

First, as always, the FTS

Then some other angles.

Then, some eye candy

I've always just had these lying around in the backround. They deserve more attention than they get,

It grows soo sloooow! I never seen a Favia this green before.

The new favia and mah lil Jawbreaker

The Setosa under 150W 14k alone... Mine has always only ever been hazard Orange

I moved the war coral down into the front where it can get full light. The color is coming back around pretty quickly. Still undecided as to wether or not to keep it.

On to the newbies:

First and foremost, The African Flameback Angelfish

He's been a game changer in the tank. Since his arrival the other two fish have become much more active. The angel taught blenny and sixline the fine art of begging for food. Now all three of them line up for breackfast and dinner every day.

Still trying to decide what to do with these monti caps... But I'm thinking levels along the back wall.

Phew!That's it!

Well mostly, the only other thing to report is a 8hr power outage didn't even phase the tank despite me not being there to aid any way.

Hope you've enjoyed the update!

Nice tank!

That Angelfish has really cute eyes haha

Do you feed the coral a lot?

Thanks! And yes I feed all the coral once a week. I reaally muck up the tank with it... Lemme see if I can still post the video... (should probably update this thing. A lot has changed.)

I feed the tank at about 1:30 into this video

Nice! Once a week sounds good. Does everything grow well for you?

I try and feed the sun coral in my tank every other day now. Which is slightly tricky if you're not feeding the rest.

I try and put it in a separate bowl while feeding

Link to comment

Ya everything is moving along nicely tho I'm certain it would grow quicker if I fed it two or three times a week. I couldn't do a sun coral they're waay to delicate for my stupid self. :P

The best trick I ever saw was a guy used some clear standpipe in order to get the food past his fish and into the sun coral. It was hilarious watching the fish get all frustrated.

Link to comment

That isn't a bad idea actually.

A plastic bottle just floats away and if they don't have time to eat it up properly the fish rip it back out.

pics?

you still have that scroll algae?

The scroll never took off for me. I think my tank was starving it for for nutrients over the summer because I wasn't home very much to feed the tank (more on that later).

Videos are always nice

Today is waterchange day... I'll get some new pics up in here and a general update. No video tho cause that takes like a week for me to edit.

My flameback is officially MIA for like three days... I've pretty much lost hope at this point. -_-

Soo I know I suck at updating my tank and apologize for that. Fact is this system has been in a downward spiral over the last six months. That said, this post is by far the worst I've ever made on the tank... I have dinoflagellates :tears:

Full on Red Tide status

20150401_133339_zpsr4k0v3cp.jpg

It was almost enough for me to rip apart the tank. But in the end I decided, as long as I was about to give up, I might as well experiment with some solutions to this somewhat common, yet very difficult problem to deal with. I've always thought there should be a simple and concise method for dealing with any major problem that comes along in our systems. We just need some science up in here!

Dinoflagellates are currently one of the greatest scourges of the home aquaria industry yet there are no known "easy fixes" to this problem. No known surefire way to kill all the various species of Dinos. Alas, my curiosity managed to get the better of me which lead to various speculations and eventually to this convoluted "plan".

I've already done the following...

-Increased the Ph to 8.4

-Filled my media reactor with Phosguard phosphate remover and Activated Carbon in order to starve out the Dinos, and detoxify the water respectively.

-Reduced my lighting's photoperiod by 4hrs. I plan to take this down incrementally to between 4-6hrs on my Actinics and 2hrs on my Metal Halide light.

-Removed all of my sand in order to reduce the surface area for this stuff to grow

Here is where the tank is at currently

These pics kill me as they are no longer what I've come to know as my aquarium.

Attempting to figure out what to do I started this thread:

http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/359533-unarmored-dinoflagellates/

Here are a couple of links to some scientific data collected during Dino blooms in the wild to consider regarding my "tests" .

http://www.int-res.com/articles/meps/3/m003p083

http://www.academia.edu/5110369/Macronutrients_requirements_of_the_dinoflagellate_Protoceratium_reticulatum

Future plans:

-Buy a UV sterilizer I really do not like to use these things as they kill everything in the water column. On the plus side Dinos in the column will be killed.

- Add some Diatomaceous Earth to my media reactor. This is mostly an experiment of my own. DE is silica based which, according to a previously linked article, fosters the growth of competitive Diatoms. The Diatoms should then be easily controlled by my clean up crew. As an added benefit DE is a very jagged/sharp substance which, from what I've heard in the past, captures Dinos more effectively than most micron filter pads. Stay tuned for updates regarding this method.

-Add a source of silica. Again, this goes back to the article regarding competition for Nitrates and Phosphates between Diatoms and Dinoflagellates. Apparently, Diatoms just need a ready source of Silica in order to overpower Dinos... Stay tuned for results from this as well.

Anyway, it's a work in progress <_<

Stay tuned and hit me with suggestions if you have any

Sorry to see dinos have taken over. Very interested to see how well using DE will work in eliminating the dinos. Hopefully it works well.

Wow this must suck, sorry. :( Hoping the best for ya.

That blasto colony is probably the largest I have seen. Did you grow it from a small frag?

Pinner Reef

Thanks for the well wishes. Things are starting to turn around in the tank. :knocks on wood:

DE is working as hoped in so much as I get a big ball of snot in my reactor once every 2-3 days. Dinos seem to be dying as well. Dunno what is causing it though

And yes, I grew that from three heads over the course of five years. It's been fragged a few times along the way. That colony Is one of the hardiest corals I've ever owned. If other corals are closed I don't think much about it, if the Blastos are closed I go straight into panic mode.
