So, as you can see, pulsing Xenia has been growing like a weed over the past few months!

Realised I had been using the wrong optics on the LEDs so put the arc pods back on while I build a new cabinet to house the LEDs but this is the ghetto rig my lights have been hanging from

Yesterday I spent my evening trying to rid my tank of all the pulsing! Anyone have any tips?

I also rearranged the rockscape, who wants to see it now??

You're lucky it's awful! Lol

I don't find them awful at all. Well, one man's pet is another man's pest as they say. I'm glad you left a few sprigs there hehe.

I just hate the way they take over, if I can get it to grow just in one big clump then that would be lovely but they seem to have stayed small but spread everywhere in my tank! (I hear they like 'less than ideal' water quality so must be my lapse attitude to reef keeping :S )

Matt - your mini reef is incredible. Thanks for sharing the pics

Thank you so much for your comment! :) I'm determined to get it looking 10x better than it does now! seeing as I now have the right lenses on my LED's we might actually get somewhere!

My next project over the weekend is to build a new cabinet/light housing so I can get rid of my ghetto PVC pipe affair!

Here are some Pictures from today with the new lenses

it's just such a shame to see it go from this:

to this:

in the space of 12months! feeling a bit ashamed of myself for neglecting it so much! :(

it just looks so bare now!

Very nice! Can't see how I missed this.

Anyway, my FTS in my thread is very outdated; my tank looks way worse now. I wonder if that is a reality of small tanks, that they cycle through death and life?

Well, where I fell short was leaving it in charge of my sister! That and changing the lighting :( but it does seem to be the life cycle of these tiny tanks! Watching the video of el fab's pico is really sad though!

Well yesterday I also picked up a few larger shells for my little hermits and this morning I found one in his new shell! :) gutted I missed it!

However I can't see my other hermit but did find something hermit like floating on the water surface, not sure if they shed a skin or anything??? Because I can't see the other guys shell laying around only the first one, what do you think?

I also did some soldering to swap some LED beads around in the bulbs, I was getting a lot of spotlighting with the 30degree lenses as I had a row of blue and a row of white and now I have 2 blue and 2 white beads in each bulb and it looks a lot better!

so excited! I just found my other hermit chilling at the back of my tank so picked him up and plonked him down with the new shells and my other hermit's old shell and guess what happened!

couple of options, non very good

increase air circulation

decrease water temperature

add some sort of heat to the top (like a metal halide lamp)

Don't recommend:

Using anti-fog compound

soap

anything chemical

Can anyone tell me if this is dead?

I also bought 2 more sexy shrimp and ordered my fish, who wants to take bets on what they are?

sorry for crappy phone pics but

one of my two little guys :)

Amazing new mushroom the colour on this one is so good! well worth the £7.50 I paid!

I also found an answer as to the bright green'ness of my mushroom, saw one in my lfs and asked and they said it was a huge green mushroom but the tank overheated and had a phos spike too and it turned like that but should recover so ive knocked my temp down a bit and bought some roaphos :)

Since changing the lenses I've been battling some brown algae im assuming diatoms so thought i'll up my filtration, buy something bigger and better than my £8 ebay HOB so I was looking at the Aquaclear 50 or 70 as used by el fab but you can't seem to buy that in the UK! no-one does HOB filters in the shops and even online they were all in the US. Hagen don't even offer it as an order in to my local shops so my LFS owner/manager got one of the fluval edge ones out of the box for me and sold me that :)

Not as big as the 50 and probably half the size of the 70 but I was able to buy it there and then (important because i'm impatient) and support my lfs at the same time, plus it's plenty big enough to have rowaphos and floss in there and i'm going to get some cheato to grow in there.

I'm also contemplating a skimmer, probably a simple airstone driven one and possibly homemade. anyone have any experience on this?

Happy new year! Yet another 5 months since my last update :/

I made a skimmer and that has been up and running for months pulling out some gross looking water *vom*

B8D14A48-A102-4101-A0BE-F19AC3EA5B3D-496

Very cheap and simple and effective enough for such a small tank!

F5514024-E93E-4089-8E67-A92F53E458B2-220

I swapped the air pumps with my FW tank as that air pump is stronger and adjustable :)

Also managed to rope my step-dad into making a cabinet to house my LEDs

Then I painted it gloss white to match the stand

Not forgetting the tank pics!

These are over a few months not 100% on what order they should be in but the mushrooms are doing great! Definitely my favourite at the min!

Everything will be going into the RSM and shutting down the pico reef :( I had problems including the LED bulbs blowing in quick succession leaving my tank dark! Hopefully I'll have better success in the RSM with a much bigger water capacity and less fluctuations! I'm sure I will start a thread for that soon enough.
