Tank is broken. It'll sit for a few months before I get around to getting a new back piece of glass cut.

Which means I need to find a new tank for the 3g comp quick smart...

Hello there.

I'd like to start this 'omg i's got me a tank dudes look at me' thread off with a small disclaimer;

Not everyone is going to like what I do, nor do I expect you to. But I shall do it how I see fit and worse comes to worse I /ignore you.

Orgional thread contents. Mainly just the tank coming out of the box and initial reactions.

Since I didn't want to make another thread for the 3gallon and under contest, I decided just to use this one.

6 dollars incluiding postage? Yeah, lid schmid, thats a great price!
$6AUD including postage. And I got two lights, pumps and plastic bits because the first one came busted.

Anyway. Off to JayCar I go for some LED's and whatever else I can find to pimp this tank.

I can't get over the fact that that Boyu logo has the same font and style as the Sony logo. haha anyways, I'll be following this because it seems interesting. Oh and one question, are you going to be running that canister filter permanently or just temp?

Link to comment

The canister is to add water volume for stability.... The only filter media in it is some carbon.

Combined water volume between tank and canister is just under 5gallons. >.>

**The canister was an e-bay special too. $18AUD

I have returned from Jaycar. (The local electronics store) And have decided that they will no longer get my business.

Traveled all the way there to get a couple of LED's. Just standard cheapo ones for a proof of concept. They wanted to charge me $5.95 per LED.

I proceeded to walk around the area going into all the shops that might sell something with blue LEDs in it... Finally I came to Super Cheap Auto who happen to sell alot of different LEDs for some reason.

So now that I have some blue to throw into the mix, here are some pictures of the lighting upgrade:[img=https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/395889_357161197639389_100000365358637_1182302_1566986210_n.jpg]Light strip. I CBF making a timer and I was looking at the panel when I was taking the stock-light apart. While I was in there playing with it, I resoldered all the original solder joints and upped the amount of current getting to the LEDs. I'll leave that up to everybody else to decide.

*edit. The light even though it is pathetic is doing its job. I threw a single zoa that hasn't opened for a couple of weeks in my main tank into this new little one... 5min and it's opened a tiny bit.

Tiny bit > None.

So I'm just sitting here. Cruising the internet... Looked over at my tank and decided I hate the rockwork.

I think tomorrow I might spend ~15min with a hammer and some super glue to make a tall, free standing piece of rockwork with some shelves for placing of things.

Nice tank so far. I was looking at getting one of these tanks myself as a pico can't wait to see how it turns out.

If you are thinking of getting one; The overflow design is crap, the media compartments are crap, the stock pump is crap... The stock light is crap... All of the joins are done poorly with black goop that they have sprayed a little bit in some places...

I spent the better part of 3 hours cleaning it up before I put anything in it.

But at the end of the day, its a box that holds water and it does this. And as a further point when it is all cleaned up and whatnot it does look quite spiffy sitting by itself.

Its cheap and you get what you pay for. (Or in my case you get a lot more than you paid for and made an importer on e-bay rather unhappy.)

So, some pictures of the life in my tiny tank;

This picture was about 30sec after I put that zoa in... The zoa hadn't opened in two weeks...

Thinking this might be a tiny aptasia, but not 100% sure. Its fine as long as it doesn't spread.

This snail chomps on algae like a boss. I have no idea how it got into my main tank, nor do I particularly care. Anyone able to ID it?

Zoa opened under the ####ty LED's. Which is more than I could get to happen in my main tank... (I'm slowly removing everything from my main and making it Fowlr, only a couple of sick zoas left in it...)

So this update is not in regards to my little Boyu tank. But it is in regards to my other tank.

About a year ago my girlfriend and I bought our first fish for my tank. A pair of tank-breed black and white clowns. They were the sole inhabitants of the 2foot (99litre, ~27gallons I think).

Well this evening I was woken up by my external pump... It was much louder than it should have been.

I turn the lights on to see whats going on, and the female clown was attacking the intake tube of the pump... Instead of the usual sleeping. Not seeing the two clowns together I got really worried, I checked the floor, took the rockscape apart... I couldn't find the male anywhere. He swam into the pump. He was rather messed up by the impeller of the pump and clearly dead.

This was at 4:30am.

By 5:00am he had a grave dug and was buried.

The rockscape is now back together...

There is now an intake mesh so fine a copepod couldn't ####ing get into it. And its siliconed in place.

Now. These two were getting ready to spawn.

I'm torn between not getting another clown... Or getting a much smaller than her male, possibly orange/white.

Anyway. I'm off to do something constructive. So I don't get more upset about it. /wave

I'm going to try to drill the tank.

I've never drilled glass before, so, this might end badly.

If all goes well I'll be building the cabinet tomorrow and getting the tank wet on the weekend.

If it goes poorly. I'll be the first out of the competition.

Wish me luck.

And... I just cracked the tank. Going to try and fix it with a piece of acrylic... *sigh*

If your going to patch it im pretty sure it should be with glass, being a glass tank and all. Best way would be to replace the entire pane or tank.

I'm going to use a windscreen repair kit on the glass.

And then silicone a new piece to the inside.

But that plan is on the back burner. Because I'm a lazy prick. >.>
