Hooligan's Clownfish Breeding Thread

So, Lani knows I've been toying around with the idea for some time. When my gf and I were still renting, I put my onyx perc and ocellaris male in their own tank. It took about 3 weeks and they started spawning like clockwork, of course, in an apartment I had limited space so raising fry was out of the question. Last July we bought a house, so I was thinking time to start breeding and raising the fry; however, getting my pair to spawn again seemed next to impossible. When they would spawn, I would get a really crappy batch, or the idiot male would eat the entire clutch. So, I decided not to do anything until I could actually get them back to laying consistently. I just recently got 2 consecutive spawns, so I decide to order my Rotigrow Complete and rotifers to start a culture. My last clutch hatched last Wednesday, and I saw this morning that I had another clutch nice and big, probably a couple of hundred eggs!

So the rots will be here on Thursday, and I'll get that going just about in time for the fry to hatch. I'm keeping it simple right now, a 10g brooder, 10g hatch, and a 20H growout tank. I have a 40b that I plan to drill and plumb that I will move larger juveniles into and planning on an S. Gigantea to encourage them to seek out a host.

Here is an older pic of my pair:

Thanks guys! Of course Pickle, I've been through your and Lani's threads a MILLION and one times!

Temper, I have NO idea what the lineage on my onyx is. I bought her probably 3 or so years ago as a true perc, she showed no signs of onyx coloration, so I got her for like 20 bucks!

Some pics from my cell of the parents to be:

I'm extremely anxious to see what the offspring might look like being hybrids and with the onyx variation. They also have very different barring patterns, the female's has a very distinct point or tip to her middle bar, while the male's is more blunt.

I always have my Reeds packages come to work and try my best to resist the temptation to open the box until I get home. I have a 45 minute drive home from work - but I'm always amazed at how well it's packed and how cold the rotifer food is when I open the box.

I figured work was the best place as I didn't want the box just sitting on my porch. It is so hard to resist the temptation of opening it! I keep staring at it just sitting in the corner of my cube!

Not much update, got the rot culture set up last night, water was light green this morning. Added about 10 drops of Rotigrow Complete, got a nice darker green. Will add some more water to the culture tonight. I have the SG at about 1.015, should I go higher?

Some shots of the eggs I took yesterday, my camera flash is so bright it nearly washes them out! If you look closely the eyes are just becoming visible:

So last night was night 7 and it looks like I had 1 hatch. I have a slow bubble rate flowing over the eggs, but wondering if this is causing them to not hatch? Maybe tonight I'll put the air stone in the corner of the tank and see what happens. Any thoughts?

Well the rest hatched tonight. Several eggs appear to be bad, maybe around 20 or so. But, I have about 40-50 swimming fry. Tinted the water and added rots, but I did notice several sort of hovering on the bottom. Should I be worried?

Not many survivors...only 2 in fact. I can't seem to get them interested in the Oto though. Still feeding rots.

Here's the best pic I could get showing the head stripe:

So, some updates:

I had lost my job and was out of work for about a month. I am back employed though, so that's good news! During that time, my broodstock has not spawned at all. I have NO idea what's going on there. I have one surviving baby, doing great. I have almost all my tanks done and ready to set up with 3 breeding pairs, of course everything was put on hold while I was not working.

I'm really at a loss as to why they won't spawn anymore. I had not changed anything, until recently, but only in an effort to get them spawning again. I might pick up an auto feeder to dump food on them all day. Right now they eat only New Life Spectrum Thera A, and occasionally they get Rod's Breeders' Blend. Any ideas would be great as it has been around 2 months since they last spawned.

they sometimes take a break. my clarkii, darwin, tomato and rods pair stopped for a few weeks to months. if you kind of ignore them and just feed them they might suprise you. happend to me. i checked the pots constantly looking for eggs. but i gave up for a few days or weeks and just fed them and left. they started laying.

also did you move anything from in front of their tanks or add something? if there is something near the tank that they got used to like a chair or some object and you moved it it will stop them as well.

Christoclowns told me a story of his broodstock and some stopped spawning and he was wondering why. here he move a chair that was in front of their tanks and they stopped. once he moved the chair back they started again.

dont give up!
