Best RO/DI System

I'm sure it will be cheaper and easier in the long run to buy an RO/DI system. The hubby and I did our taxes tonight and it looks like we'll have a nice return. We've agreed to split it 50/50 after paying off a couple bills so I'm looking into buying an RO/DI system as well as my livestock with my share. I'm totally unfamiliar with these systems, have very little mechanical ability to set it up, and don't have a ton of time to devote to it. So please recommend the best system for a technically-challenged doofus like me. Right now I'm using pre-mixed SW from the store but I'm going to need FW for top-offs once I start running the lights so whichever system gets the most votes here will get purchased ASAP! Thanks!

Great choice!

They are the only RO/DI vendor who treats and tests all their RO membranes to increase the efficiency and GPD, use much higher end absolute rated filters rather than less efficient nominal rated filters and to custom blend every ounce of their DI resins based on tens of thousands of hours of real world testing. It pays off.

Those SpectraPure are an awesome deal though. Unfortunately, I doubt they will still be that cheap by the time I get back and am ready to buy one.

What is everybody's opinion on the RO/DI units that they sell on eBay? I am referring to the cheap ones. I think they are Watergeneral. I drawn to them because of the price. I am worried about replacing membranes and resin later due difficulty in find the parts, but that may not be that hard.

You get exactly what you pay for and cheap is not where you want to be. Water is the single largest ingredient in a reef system and everything depends on it, don't skimp here.

There really is a difference.

I'm lucky, I work at a chemistry lab and we have a huge RO system with several tanks more than waist high. And we also have a Milli-Q filter on the end of that which makes really clean RODI water. I can fill a gallon in just five minutes. I work late once in awhile and bring in all my empty water jugs and fill them up.

Jealous! It took me like 6 hours to fill up my big jug and 2 one gallon jugs today!

I kind of miss those days also. Some years ago when I Supervised a large municipal surface water treatment plant I had a 37 G reef in my office that was my pride and joy. I had an endless supply of ultrapure water from the lab and better yet I had staff 24/7 so took turns feeding for me on weekends and holidays!

Not to hijack the topic but do you have to get a drinking water kit with these things or can you just use the end product of an RO/DI filter for drinking, coffeemaking etc. Just wondering because my Pur water filter that we use is leaking and I will need to spend $40.00 to replace it. Could just put that to an RO/DI unit.

P.S. I live in an apartment so can't really mess with the plumbing.

If you just want to fill a bottle, pitcher or jug for drinking etc, you can install a tee and ball valve or three way valve between the RO and DI stages so it bypasses the DI stage and you get great drinking water. Its not quick since they only make a few ounces a minute but it works.

For somewhere between $65-$100 you can buy a complete add on drinking water kit for one with a pressure tank, faucet and autoshutoff valve so you get pressurized RO water on demand or many vendors sell reef/residential RO/DI systems already plumbed up such as Buckeye Field Supplies reef/residential. Its a reef quality RO/DI with a drinking water kit versus a lower quality drinking water system adapted for DI which is usually a more expensive way to go and may not work as well.

I stumbled upon this post while researching RO/DI systems. I basically have the same questions as the original post but was hoping for more up to date info. Has anything changed? Still accurate?

BRS has an awesome doorbuster on a 4 stage RODI with pressure gauge and inline TDS meter for $140 shipped. Thats pretty great.

I would stick with the Spectrapure Refurbished RO/DI for $124. It comes with a specially treated and batch tested 90 GPD high rejection rate RO membrane, custom blended reef specific DI resin and a capillary tube flow restrictor all of which mean it is a much better system than others. The life of the DI alone will more than pay of it over other systems in a year or two at most of you make much water. I would add a handheld ATC compensated TDS meter and avoid the inlines.
