Hi Im Jacob,

I am 12 years old and would like to get into reefing. My cousin is giving me a 200 dollar gift card to drs. Foster and smith and I don't have much space in my room and my brother won't let me get anything larger than he thinks is too big (which is anything 10g+), so I was thinking about getting a jbj pico tope with an ac70 mod and keep zoas, shrooms and rics (and a goby). right now I have a 10g freshwater tank with some community fish and mangroves. I would love to challenge meself with a pico as me first sw tank and I have the time and . I would like to have some pointers and some does and dont's to lead me into the right direction. The main purpose of this thread is pretty much to have an updated version of psys's build. I will soon post what I have in my cart at drs. Foster smith .com.

Thanks,

Jacob

As I'm sure you are aware, there are a ton beautiful of ten gal nanos on here, check em out and copy the one you like best. This site is great and the folks here are really nice although, some folks don't like the unruley teens here. But you'll be fine cause you're not even a teen yet! JK!!!!

Welcome and have a great time here.

Just remember that your "huge" 200$ gift card will eventually run out and you'll be stuck with a tank, no money, and the need for water changes.

I'd recommend you have another source of income ready to go before you buy anything.

The gift card is just for the equipment to start up the tank. I have money that I have been saving and my grandma pays me to do yard work at her house.

Thanks for responding so quickly! Unfortunately I don't have enough room for another 10g, I don't have a space where I could put a stand either. I was thinking about a biocube or nano cube but I'm not able to get one due to the limeted space. I would rather have anything 10g+, but don't have the space. That's why I thought a pico would be better for me.

Thanks again,

Jacob

just to give you some perspective, i've had my 14 gallon biocube for about a year now and have spent ~$2000 on stuff. this hobby is anything but cheap, and smaller doesn't mean *that* much cheaper!

also, here are some questions you need to answer if you do end up going through with it:

~ where are you going to get the salt water?

~ how are you going to manage evaporating water? (this is crucial in a pico)

~ how is your filter system going to be set up?

~ picos often have an overheating problem, have you thought about that?

remember that there are some essential things for a tank that cost a lot, such as a

refractometer (~$40)

test kits (>$20)

heater ($30)

added together with the cost of your tank that's already over $100, and you still need a timer, live rock, live sand, salt water, fresh ro/di water, temperature meter, food for corals/fish, a mag float to clean the sides, any of your filter equipment, and alllll your livestock...

i started planning and setting up my tank a few months ago and so far it has cost me about $400 for where i'm at now, it would have been more but i had equipment from tanks that i had in the past. if you can't afford to keep the tank i wouldn't waste my money. i tried back when i was in high school and it never worked because i didn't have the money. i just ended up with a bunch of crap that i couldn't afford to actually use....i would wait until you can easily afford to do it and until then learn as much as you can; this site is a great tool to learn the hobby! just my $.02
