Seaside Fish Lover
Hi, I'm a newbie and have a couple questions regaurding the use of sumps. 1. Where should the output from the fishtank idealy be located? 2. What kind of a return pump will I need for a 10 gallon sump/30 gallon reef. I'm planning on having a protien skimmer/thermometer/filer in the sump. 3. Do you think a 10 gallon sump will be adequate? 4. Where should I return the water too? 5. how do I create an overflow for a sump? (article links would be the best) Thank you for your reply's in advance. Link to comment

vyger
I had a 30 gal reef for about a year and had an Amiracle over flow down to a 20 gal sump, which i also used as a refugium. In the sump I had a RIO 1700 pump for the return up to the tank , very easy set up and worked well with no problems... I didn't need an overflow for my sump because it held about 10 gal of water and if the return pump ever quit , there was plenty of room to hold the water coming down from the tank .. I just had a hose setup from the pump in the sump that went to fitting that I could hang on the back of the tank...If i had it to do over , I would prob have the tank drilled....but the way I had it set up worked fine Link to comment
