Specifically, what's toxic about it?

im thinking what makes it bad is that the stuff added in to kill mold/mildew and the like, will kill the beneficial bacteria in the tank.

Man I feel so loved!

What I think I'm going to do is put a thin layer of GE I on top of the GE II. That should put a stop to my problems!

Thanks! It's really not hard at all. For one, make sure your glass is cut very well. Secondly, get the right silicone :knockshead:. Silicone it all together and voila! You've got a tank.

Yeah today I will tear it down and clean off the old silicone. Will mineral spirits clean off the residue?

Where all do you apply the silicone? On the edges where the glass will meet and then on the inside edges? And how do you make sure everything is straight and 90 degrees? :)

NURSE33.4 - just sit back ad watch. I will try to post a detailed description with pics of how to put together an aquarium.

Here are the pieces of glass, after dis-assembly. You can see the tool of the crime - the x-acto knife.

Here they are after the silicone residue was removed with the x-acto, mineral spirits, and some elbow grease. I already applied the tape for smooth silicone lines.

Stay tuned for a howto! What silicone brand/model would you recommend that's aquarium safe?

Does using tape for straight silicone lines really work?

55gal: Reef - 10g: Leaffish Macro-Algae Tank - 3g: Pico Reef - 1.6g: Mini Macro Tank

I swear yoshii you turn every thread into a chat box lol!!!

Lack of research is the biggest down fall of people in this hobby.

It does. You just can't let the silicone dry. You need to apply the silicone, smooth it out with your finger or whatever, and then remove the tape. If you let it sit, the silicone will adhere to the tap as well as the glass, and when you try to peel the tape off, it could either leave pieces of ripped tape beneath the silicone, or pull section of the silicone out. Most likely the former though.

Also.. that DAP stuff works well too.. but for a tank your size, you could get away with using GE I. That is the GE silicone you want. It does not have mold inhibitors like GE II. Just curious.. but did you even read the bottle, where it specifically says "mold inhibitors".. ? Or did you think it wasn't going to be a problem? lol.

srsly, there's lots of guys named jesus alive today and no one cares about them unless they can hit a baseball

Thanks for the pic.

I read that only 100% silicone is safe. GE II was 100%. It didn't advertise any bioseal nonsense anywhere except in the fine print. And of course I bought it!:)
