Costa Reefing Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 I saw some puffers, eels, damsels, gobys and blennys last time i went out on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, I even caught a barnicle blenny and my friend caught a red head goby which are both now in my tank. I have been wanting to go to the Caribbean side for a while but the ####ty weather/roads have not let that happen. heres barry the barnacle blenny in my tank (cant afford underwater housing yet so no pics of it in the wild) Link to comment

I found out a way to get pics for you guys without having to buy an underwater camera. Solution- Cheap camera in two ziplock baggies. I was talking to my friend and it turns out he loes snorkeling. He's been taking pictures for a while now with just a camera in plastic bages. Link to comment

animalmaster6 Posted August 11, 2011 Author Share Posted August 11, 2011 Had an awesome day of snorkeling today. Found sculpins, flounder, small wrasse like fish, everywhere! I even caught the small fish and a flounder (maybe 1" in length)! I saw one flounder around 8-10" in seagrass. THe sculpins were awesome. And as usual I saw a great amount of starfish, hermit crabs, sponges, anemones, etc. I really need to start getting some underwater pictures this place is awesome. Link to comment

Jamie Posted August 11, 2011 Share Posted August 11, 2011 Just went freediving around the little rock all the way to the left in this picture: it's actually a pretty big rock though. and unfortunately, no underwater pictures because most of the pictures I take with my sh1tty-ass camera end up looking like this: however, I do have a good story for you! So I was swimming down this slope that was covered in corallines, kelp, anthopleura anemones, and bright orange sea cucumbers, and came up to this ledge. Just over the edge, I spotted some polyp-looking things, and I was like, "sweet, zoanthids!" So I grabbed them and tried to pull them off the rock, but they were all attached to this one long arm sort of thing. So I followed the arm up to the body, and then the peeved glare of the animal whose arm I was tugging on. His angry gaze said, "I am a giant pacific octopus and I am VERY displeased the you have interrupted my crab dinner." So I was like, "Ohmygosh I am SO SORRY," but then I kind of tried to pick him up because I was running out of air but really wanted to be friends. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to convince a large octopus to let go of it's rock when it has only just met you, so I had to swim to the surface alone, and alas, when I returned he was gone. Jamie Posted August 12, 2011 Share Posted August 12, 2011 That's three arch rocks on the right, and the whole backdrop is cape meares. I saw the same general stuff as cape lookout, so if you want, try here! I imagine three arch rocks would be excellent as well, and not too far of a swim from the beach. Just so you know, all of the good stuff is below 10-15 feet deep, where the anthopleuras and ochre stars give way to plumose anemones, sea cukes and other cool things. I saw a TON of dungeness crabs at the deeper depths as well. Link to comment

Also PADI is the way to go, i did it with a friend and everything was half off. And i would highly recommend buying your own equipement. It is way more reliable and is way comfortable. Order should be something like this, correct me if i'm wrong: 1) mask and snorkel that actually fits your face! 2) good pair of flippers and booties 3) a dive bag to hold all your exspensive s*** 4) personalized wetsuit. the better it fits the more comfortable your dive will be 5) BCD/air tanks. i would only buy these if you are serious about diving and did quite a bit of research on diving, diving equipement care, and have quite a few dives logged. And yes this will cost a lot Link to comment

I'd love to get an underwater housing for my d90, but for $1400, I just can't do it... yet, lol. I just sold my gopro, and I'll probably sell the canon too to raise funds, but might just end up getting a fancier point and shoot. and that list sounds about right to me! I'm currently at the 'why are drysuits so expensive?' phase, which is between 4 and 5. Link to comment

I really like marine biology and am going to go to school for it (maybe minor in ecology). I want to go diving and even get SCUBA certified...maybe in a few years - when I am in FL or something. How much does it cost (generally) to get certified in a pool? There is a diving school in Columbus, OH, though I've never been to it before. That would be an awesome grad. present (next summer). Ha and i love where you are in your current gear status. and dry suits are definitely after #5, unless it's fricken freezing where you live so you don't even think about wearing a wetsuit. Yeah, I know. I have some money left over from work this summer, and I'm trying to raise funds by selling stuff off right now, and hoping I can convince the parents to pitch in a little. Probably won't happen until christmas though. And yeah, drysuits are expensive, too. When I went freediving last week, the water was 50.5 degrees, but a wetsuit is just going to have to cut it. While a dry suit actually keeps you dry and is meant for colder temperatures - I think? That is correct. You actually wear fleece and stuff under your drysuit to keep extra warm. As I understand it you get a little damp around your face, wrists and ankles, but otherwise you're totally dry. As far as cost goes - it depends, try to be as smart as you can. My friend did it through his school PADI for around $300. My other friend did it SSI and got suckered in to spending $1400. Octopus is awesome Jamie! Link to comment

You should check with the Diving Safety Officer at your school. Most schools and universities with colleges that participate in diving or boating are AAUS scientific diving certified. DSOs are often instructors and can help you out with getting an open water diving cert. Scientific diving has opened up a lot of doors for me; it's something you should definitely check out!
