Any idea if I could add a small handful inside a Nc28 PC hood? Thinking about maybe adding 4-5 blues and 4-5 whites but worried about heat and such.

they are about 2.5" tall and 2" across

they should fit in a BioCube hood. you would need to take out the current bulbs.

however. because of the optics you wont get a good spread on the light.. you will probably laser beam a little.

I was surprised too to be honest, I didn't even know I had a login. So I'm not trolling, I'm just not visiting altogether, ha ha.

I've had fresh tanks for about 20 years but started my first salt tank in 2006. That was a 10g. From there I went to a 55g and then a 90g. It wasn't until the last week or so that I decided on doing a 5g nano hence my visiting this site.

Thanks for the welcomes, I think.

Ah crap, was hoping to find something I could fit in the hood....now the question build a fixture and see if I can make the NC rimless....or buy one of those stunner strips.....I think a trip to Lowe's after work is in order, or does anyone know of any fixtures or such that are sized good to be over a NC28?

Find a empty sunpod fixture or a Aluminum Project box.

stunner strips are for supplementation, they are not for strong enough for corals.

A single one, no. Multiples can definitely support coral. Add in the optional reflector and they work even better. Don't expect sps corals with them, but medium to low light corals do ok.

Do you think these 4x1w and these 3x1w are made with the same LEDs? I can't find any 1x3w cool white bulbs, so I figured 4x1 would be better then 3x1, what do you think?

4x1w (also e27, a little more convenient) http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item2562171588

3x1w http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item19c3f40880

Thinking about lighting a 14x14x12 tank with these. Thinking 3 1x3w blues and 3 4x1w cool whites?

all my whites are the 3x1w . 4x1w would probably be fine too :)

I went the gu10 route because of the low profile of the socket. Screw in sockets are usually a little pricier too.

i think that would be a great arrangement :)

Well i'm looking at these http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item4aaa030d46

They're not that bad price and I think I could make a pretty good looking light setup with those. Plus each socket has a little power switch so i can turn single ones on/off. Sure, it's 6 power cords, but that allows me to have a more customizable dawn/dusk setting, too. Could start with 1 blue, then the 2nd blue, then maybe a white, then have them all power up, then slowly power off, too.

When you say that it would be fine, do you think it would give off a significant amount of heat compared to the 3x1?

it might give a little more heat. if you run then open air they should be fine though. I havent had any issues at all open air with my lights.

if you put them in a hood make sure there is airflow

How far off the surface do you keep yours?

So I think I'm just going to stick with 3 of these http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item564381900b

That way I don't have to worry about wiring anything, plus I think it'll look a little better.
That fixture should work right?

SO just making sure I'm not missing anything...

3x 1x3w blue led http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item25621721f3

OR

3x 4x1w blue led http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item19c3f40513

AND

3x 4x1w cool white led http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item2562171588

AND

3x dual e27 sockets http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item564381900b

total of $52.94 for 21w LED (1x3w blues)
OR $54.94 for 24w LED (4x1w blues)

Which blue bulbs would you take?

thinking about ordering an extra blue, extra white, and an extra dual e27 socket incase I wanna change my bulb ratio, or add 2 extra, or if one burns out, as its only an extra $13 bringing the totl to $64.92

they are atinics. so like the regular blue bulbs. I run half blue bulbs and half white bulbs to get a nice even color in the tank.
