HOB Refugium?

Have you ever thought about creating a hob refugium with media storage and a pump located inside the unit? I want to buy a cpr but hate the pump showng in the tank and no place to put carbon, filter floss, etc. Possibly a surface skimmer integrated somehow also? Maybe it's not something you want to produce but I thought it was worth a shot to bring it up.

Thanks for looking!

Those HOB refugiums are ridiculously overpriced. The only thing they accomplish is displacement. For the money I would just stick the algae and the sand I would have in the refugium in my display in an inconspicuous spot. Another alternative is just using an aquaclear filter or other power filter filled with chaeto.

Yes but who wants to stick a refugium in a 5.5g nano lol? I was thinking a small hob refugium like a cpr would be ideal. I have a modded ac20 right now but I like the look of a hob fuge better. Just thinking that between the price of an ac70 and media storage it's the same price as a small cpr hob.

How about an AquaClear 70 or 110 unit with one of our upcoming media baskets?

I love the media baskets but not to big on the ac70. I use the hob filter on the side of my tank and it's a touch to big for my tank. I have a modded ac20 with a diy pvc surface skimmer and it works ok but with a cpr style hob refuge/sump I can put everything inside. Even place a tunze nano skimmer in it. :) That way you see the return and inlet pipe and that's it. Well maybe I'll just make my own 8"x3"x12" hob refuge. ;)

How bout taking out the pipe inside the CPR refugium and cut it a little to be able to fit a hose and connect it to a pump that you can store inside the refugium to suck in water. You might just need to find an extension for the outside part of the inlet PVC to get long enough to reach the tank water. I've never done that myself, but has been thinking about it.

Check out the Finnex External HOB Refugium / Breeder. It's only 20 bucks and appears to be well-designed. I just picked up one of their canister filters for my pico build and I'm more than pleased with their build quality and the silence of their motors.
