Candy Cane Coral Splitting?

Just curious if anyone has experience with these corals.

I have a neon green candy cane coral.Ive noticed a little bone growth on it and it seems puffed up.I sort of see a bubble towards the center. Is that how these things branch off.The coral is covering the bone part and looks healthy. The bubbles like under the tissue near the top.

Haven't had my candycane split yet (was only 2 heads when I got it, and I think they were still splitting), but what you described sounds like what my Hammer coral does.

Skeleton with a big polyp on top... then, at the base of the polyp, but above the skeleton, tiny heads start to pop out (along with big heads splitting) and eventually grow into a new branch.

And, just because.. here's some Candycane coral porn from my tank:

(Disregard flatworms, they're mostly gone now ;P)

My candy cane was only 7 heads when I got it and I just recently fragged an 8 head frag for my GF and still have 8 heads.

Mine just started splitting like crazy, each head would develop multiple mouths and then just split.

My hammer is also splitting that way but also has a bunch of tiny heads at the base( like 7-9)

how fast should a candy cane split? ive have a single head for about 4 months and nothings changed D:

Way sooner than that. They are quite prolific when happy (aren't we all). What is your lighting and position of your coral in the tank and are you feeding it at all? Flow and other tank parameters?

it's weird cuz lots of ppl say very fast and lots of ppl say slow. I guess it would really depend. I think once it finds it's "sweet spot" it'll probably grow "quickly". Well... as quick as LPS can grow. You can always try feeding at night if you want to try and speed it up. They can be fed really easily.

*edit* oh bio beat me to it =P

I agree feeding = growth for LPS. I have 2 acan heads and 3 candy cane heads that were purchased on the same day. I have been feeding the acans like crazy- cus they are purty :), and have counted 5 babies at the base at less than a month!

The candy canes I have only fed maybe twice, and so far only one of the heads has any sign of splitting, and that one was already started when it was purchased.

Just my experience though...

i got 3 heads like 2-3 months ago and it's 8+ now.

fastest LPS grower I've got except war coral.

the heads elongate to a long oval and split, haven't had any budding off the base or anything.

no target feeding at all.

med-high flow, the polyps move in current slightly. 15" away from 6x39w T5, skimmer less tank.

I've had the one pictured above for probably 2 months and have seen no new heads :(

I feed 4-5 times a week.

Like I said, though, I'm not certain these 2 heads were finished splitting when I picked them up.

they look to be going oval shaped now, I'd expect 4 heads within a couple weeks.

dual t5 in a 20 long. its on the sand bed.(the only place the turbo wouldnt knock it over) for flow, its about 15 inches away from a hydor mini 425gph. and i have a hydor 750 in the back of the tank.

parameters are all good. but i dont have a calcium test, well i do but i lost the card for it, so its useless.

+1.....they start getting that oval shape when getting ready to split. You will be able to see two mouths before the split and then the two heads slowly split apart.

IME Caulastrea sp like a surprising amount of light. I've kept them under 150w MH with good results. I'd slowly raise them up maybe into the upper half of your tank SLOWLY and make sure they are secured with glue-putty- glue sandwich to the base that the skeleton is attached to.

agreed -- I keep mine 6" above the level I can keep SPS alive at.

so it's getting a lot of light. and a lot of flow, not insane amount but more than any other LPS i've got.

You guys are so smart ;) that pic was from about a month ago.. gave them a good look last night, and the head on the right is showing a second mouth (very tiny, but clearly a mouth) and the one on the left has a colored line that I expect to be one in a few days.

I have 2 in my tank one splits like crazy and the other hasn't split at all. They both get the same care and about the same water flow.

Do they like flow? Had mine a few months, recently starting feeding it - about mid way tank. Lights arent super powerful.
