Deleted User 6
John, this stuff's taking over my tank. I'll have to get better pics tomorrow - was a bit rushed and the lights were going off. It's not feathery like bryopsis - it's kinda like hair algae except nothing eats it and it grows in little mossy clumps. And it's attached pretty tightly to the rocks. Any ideas? Link to comment
sjaded
it's kinda like hair algae? Link to comment
johnmaloney
so many species like that it is hard to make any kind of positive id without a microscope without it just being referred to as "turf algae". Is it thick? Single holdfast or or rhyzoidal mat? (pretend I spelled it right) Link to comment
Deleted User 6
i'm gonna say single holdfast. turf algae is def. a good name for it. what eats it? bluelegs, ceriths, astreas, turbos, nerites, and pencil urchins do not. Link to comment
johnmaloney
have you put them on it or are they just not eating it? i would go with an emerald next, dental pick, or algaecide dip/light deprivation? what else is on the rock? How widespread is it, just those pieces? Link to comment
Deleted User 6
no, it's all over. and i've tried putting things on it. dang i don't want an emerald, but i guess i'll have to try. what about a tuxedo urchin? or sea hare? Link to comment
johnmaloney
rock boring urchin if anything. tuxedo urchins are a like a juvie pincushion when it comes to cutting power. Both would be more effective than the pencil, but both have some additional drawbacks.. blue tuxedo urchins like to wear things as camouflage rock boring urchins have a sting to them if you poke yourself. Happens to me often, like a bee sting maybe you get used to it or you stop being clumsy. They may wear things, but unlikely. Sea hare probably would depending on the species. Probably not a ragged sea hare, but a spotted sea hare or a black sea hare. Both would get too big, but if you can get them, clean the rock and then donate them back....only thing is do you have any nems, or even some LPS with a good sting, powerheads get them everytime etc.. maxi jets are probably the only safe powerhead for a sea hare, and that is with the telescoping connector attached. Deleted User 6
i've got an mp40, but i have the foam guard for it. what about a lettuce nudi? i don't care about the tuxedo wearing things around - but i definitely don't want to get stung. and don't rock boring urching bore into the rock? Link to comment
johnmaloney
sort of, but mostly that is a misnomer. I guess they could scrape some, but they "bore" into plating species of coralline which shape the coralline into a bigger pieces cause of more surface area and that grows and is "bored" and etc.. until you get a big rock looking structure that is really just a coralline plant. kind of like what this guy is doing on wwm: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/EchinodermPIX/E...is_KBRsmall.jpg but the plants can be very large and impressive. You had a sample of one of those coralline plants, i guess it wasnt quite big enough... sometimes in the trade rock boring type urchins are called short spine urchins you should frag some of that algae with the holdfast and mail it to me so I can feed it to all sorts of critters so you don't have too Link to comment
Deleted User 6
good idea - i have some frag plugs with it on it, maybe that would work. it's kinda cool actually - it's like moss. but it's just growing everywhere. Link to comment
johnmaloney
sure send me a flag plug with it, that would be great. will feed it to a hundred things and report backyou can even keep the coral on it. lol.... would it be easy to get one of the frags and remove the coral? Link to comment
Deleted User 6
if you can nurse my purple hornets back to health, i'll let you keep a few Link to comment

Outofstock
I think its cool looking...send me some for my macro mangrove tank! I can see it now...a whole lawn of that stuff! Link to comment
Deleted User 6
if it would stay in one place i would keep it. but it grows up all around my corals and is starting to cause issues. Link to comment
johnmaloney
yeah if only you can train that stuff right? no i was just kidding about the coral. but i am a gsp/xenia type of guy anyway if you are wondering....lol Link to comment
