New Experimental Macro and Sponges Thread

If the macro is commonplace or currently widely available in the hobby lets save its discussion for another thread unless it is in relation to an experimental algae. (Such as Kalymenia didn't survive shipping, but neither did some chaeto it was with) etc.. Too many tangents to go on which is fine, but makes for a bad read.

So far from the other thread we worked with:

Macros - (pics and the rest to come)

Halymenia elongata - doesn't recoup well - poor shipper - tears are suspect that it will die

halymeniaelongata.JPG

Halymenia echinophya - same shipping risk as other Halymenia species. I think it rehabs very well, (personal experience), and it is very easy to keep. We have been using this for some time now for food in our own tanks.

Titanophora encrustans - ships okay, keeps well doesn't like bright lighting like most other delicate reds

Stressed? (got2envy photo)

Sciania compalanta - Likes flow all around it, ships okay with next day, rehabs poorly, tears are suspect

SCIANIA.JPG

Stypodium Zonale - (weetie has some info I need to bring over) - can handle a range of flow and light, ships well

Out of water (weeties photo):

In water (weeties photo)

Unidentified Red algae - ships well damp, does okay shipped in water too.

(weeties pic from post 520 in the old thread)

Brown Bushy Algae - I think a species of gracilaria but still haven't had time to look it up. Ships awesome, can even go with Priority mail. Hardy and grows fast. (I have a piece that must now be almost double in size 3 weeks or so later)

Kallymenia westii - poor shipper - grows well, fast even in the tank - found as drift sometimes. (fishfreak you are right, the shores are covered in it this week. I went there to hang out the other day and it was on the beach every few yards or so. By the time I got there it was dead, how did yours do? I saw it dried and up a bit towards the dunes )

Sciania hallae - ?

Agardhinula - what happened with this? I still have it I think :) I said I was going to send it out but then I think I just kept it each time.... sorry! Doesn't like bright lighting, needs a decent amount of confused but not necessarily turbulent flow.

5.JPG

Nemastoma gelatinosum - ships well with next day, easier to keep for a globular red but still hard to keep b/c of possible irregular flow issues? Beware of pods!

NEMASTOMA.JPG

Purple encrusting coralline (species name to follow)

Sponges & tunicates - (pics and the rest to come)

white sponge - grows well, ships okay to next day locations. Hardy once it arrives intact

red sponge - hasn't been shipped yet, grows well

orange encrusting sponge - Ships well, seems to fizzle and die out in aquariums without silica - silica requirement makes it a bad long term candidate

blue sponge - ships well, able to live on a snail means it is somewhat adaptable and hardy. This seems like a good candidate for captivity. Positive growth observed in a few systems now. (Okay 3 but that is a few :) )

orange tunicate - I have an orange tunicate that has been growing well, I haven't shipped it yet. When I get caught up around here I am going to talk fishfreak into trying it out.

Sign me up as well! If you want, send me some when I place the UPS order.

mine looked red on shipment, i have gotten it from a few people it seems to do it. under pretty bright t5s actinics it seems to be getting bluer. I am still new to this algae, but I know a lot of people have had success with it, any thoughts?

by the way, I have accidentally lost some pms, if you are supposed to have a rare macro shipping out this week, please email through my site with the subject "RARE MACRO SHIPMENT" all in caps if you can. I want to make sure I catch it.

I know I have let you down a bit with the pictures, but soon I promise! :) The water has been too warm and clear for picture taking lol..

Bad news, there was a power outage here on long island last night (atleast in my area) & of course i was at work & unaware of said power outage (so i coudlnt flip on the generator to keep power to the tank & fridge). Got home to see a flashing 12:00 alarm clock.

*not good*

Check the timer on my light & it's 5 hours off of what it should be. Told myself everything would be fine, reset the timer & went to bed. Needless to say when i woke up, i woke up to a googy ball of translucent ochtodes everything else looked fine. Tank sat for 4-5 hours with no power, flow, heater etc. That macro didnt last very long. Cheato on the other hand is fine

that sucks, could have been worse though. Dying algae in stagnant water can cause ph to go crashing, glad it didn't it seems. (or you got to it in time). My beaugregory damsel is not at all happy that I am shipping you his new found favorite food today. You might want to stay out of FL for at least month until he is over it. :)

By the way, I still have yours set to ship out today, but if you want to hold it for a few days in light of recent changes let me know. (soon though)

I'm always down for trying something new... I've got a 5.5g macro tank set up in the process of upgrading the lights. I'd be more then happy to post results of how a new species takes to living in a tank. Thats a small price to pay for getting free macros :D

jbm - lol ! :) - you got half of that new red too, I like it, seems plenty hardy. Looks best under 6700k or 10k.

ok cool, let me get some more though this weekend URFAVORITEHOBOIN. I have the new one that went out this week, (I think this is the real Halymenia duch., but if I screwed up that ID again...). I am going to the Keys this weekend, and there are a few things I am hoping to track down again.

- the other catch is you have to pay for shipping.

I just started seeing growth from that unusual form of Caulerpa you sent me last time!

I lost half of it after shipment, but the remainder must be happy since it's started growing. :)

John-I just got a shipment in that group buy out of KS & was very happy :D I've got a UPS account so I can cover that portion. Good luck this weekend & enjoy I do have any sort of large bodies of water within 2 hours drive of me.

Thanks! I had a great time this weekend (my weekend runs Thurs-Sat). Saw lots of amazing things, but had to leave today just hours before the coral spawning...:( I kind of wanted to see that. Some new algae though for this thread I think, I have to see how it stabilizes. A type of spatula algae different than what we have carried in the past. Spatula algae types are hard to keep, but look cool and have a felt like touch which is cool.
