How did you get a live berricuda back from hawaii. I hope you have plans for when he grows up.

i am a permitted collector within the state of Hawaii, License # 23278. i just bagged him up and shipped him to my front door haha.

and yes, i do indeed have plans for the little bugger :)

Whooo a barracuda!

We have a couple at the store who have been looking for one for about two years! Lucky!

I think it looks sweet, but the reason im not sure about getting one is lighting optiosn seem limited unless you can fit some MH fixture under the hood or some HO leds I dont see this tank being that fit of a photosynthetic reef. How much room is under the little hood?

well, with the stock light arm under the hood there is litterally like no space at all. however, if the arm is gutted and the hood filled with a heatsink and fans on the back side an HO LED retro would be a cake walk

i myself was looking for one for ages before i got this little guy :) (well, when i say one i mean about 6 hahaha)

my other passion (aside from pico reefs) is mega systems, shark displays and the like. ive wanted a pack of 6 greats for as long as i can remember. but currently being without a mega system i am left with the picos :)

i hafta say tho, the prices people ask for these fish are more than fair. i probably saw over 100 of these little guys, but even being an freediver and collector i had an extremely hard time catching any. i had 3 total at the end of a week, making bidaily dives on the same site in an effort to acquire my pack, but two were so small that this one ate them :o haha. even boxfish and triggers are easier to catch than these little bugs :P

on another note, the tank has had some recent additions :P pics soon, letting them settle in and start to look their best again after the move

AWESOME!!!!!! I'm a big fan of NPS corals and this little tank of yours is a beauty! :) The little barracuda is adorable.

How are your water params with your constant coral feedings? Do you do water changes more frequently to battle any potential nitrate spikes?

Also, what temp are you keeping the tank at?

SUBSCRIBING! :)

hey, thanks for the kind words :)

the nitrates and phosphates gets pretty high, but i try and do 50% water changes every week or so. sometimes it goes longer tho.

i keep the tank at normal reef temps with a little hydor pad hidden in the ac filter.

one unusual thing ive noticed is that rather than calcification in the form or corraline algea as one would expect in a high light traditional reef. i get calcification in the form of millions of tiny forminiferans all over my glass :) very cool. so my algea scraper has become more of a tube worm scraper haha.

also was able to snap a few pics of my latest addition doin its thing :P

You barracuda looks just like a gar lol.

SilverNeedlenoseGarWFM_P889.jpg

thats a correct assumption, but for the wrong reasons.

my barracuda looks nothing like a GAR, the prehistoric freshwater fish of north and south america which i have also kept (Cuban Gars and Longnose gars were my favorite in the family). Google "Lepisosteidae" for images of true gars :P

it does however bare some resemblance to the brackishwater needlefish (Xenentodon cancila i believe) that that picture is of due to a shared family tree (though loosely).

the major differnece is again, the salinity tolerances, size, and taxonomy on a rather basic level :P

nice try tho :P jking. i love the chance to share my freshwater side as well :P

thank you. member NVTE came by today to get some frags from this little puppy (and drop off some of his AMAZING palys). the tanks lights were off but i think he can testify to how hot it is :P even in the dark.
