Is gorilla glue, the type that foams up, reef safe? I know the gorilla glue branded super glue is, but i am curious about there standard glue.

Chemically, it is very similar (if not exactly the same ) to the "GreatFoam" stuff that folks use to make "rock walls"

I think that once it is cured it probably wouldn't cause any problems.....

A close check of the msds sheets is probably recommended.

You made me curious so I looked up the MSDS on Gorilla Glue's site. It says this:

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Do not allow the product to escape into waters, wastewater or soil.

Biodegradability 0% after 28 days

Bioaccumulation Does not bioaccumulate.

Acute toxicity to fish LC0 > 1,000 mg/l (Zebra fish, Brachydanio rerio) 96 hrs.

Toxicity for daphnia EC 50 > 1,000 mg/l (24 hrs.)

Acute toxicity to bacteria EC 50 > 100 mg/l (3 hrs.)

I don't know exactly what that Acute toxicity line means, but I think I'd find out before I tried it.

Cured and painted it should be OK (i.e. making rock formations, etc.)

On a side note, I have a story about Gorilla glue.

I used it to glue the seams on a mahogany locker on my boat. The main sail block is attached to the locker. I broke the wood before it broke the glue, and solid mahogany is not weak wood.

I'm watching this thread, too.

i intend to use it to make my rock formation for my nano. i used a ton of super glue gel and putty. it really didnt work that well...

how long would a proper cure cycle be? days, weeks???

months.. its just not designed for this use.. not designed to be submerged in water.. not to be used period.. why would you risk it.. maybe in a 1 gal pico for a test but not on the main reef you have..

im not gunna risk anything. if it isnt appropriate to use, then i won't be using it. I am simply looking for a better alternative to super glue gel and putty.

Well I hope your geting your superglue gel from the dollar store. I get 3 tubes for a buck.. @ walmart it would cost me $4.00 for the same amount.

I found out that this is actually good. 1000 mg/l wasn't lethally toxic to zebra fish for at least 96 hours. I wasted a lot of my daily google time allotment to find this out though.

I'm thinking it probably is safe if you let it cure fully. There's nothing I can find specifically though so I'd be hesitant to test it. I know the Becket's pond foam has been in use for 2 years+ without failure so I think I'd go that way if I needed a foaming adhesive unless you REALLY need a glue as strong as gorilla glue.

I don't know if I could handle the stress of being the tester though. As far as I can see, no one has used it and then made a post about it in any of the reef sites I frequent.

This means that at 1000 mg (1gram) per liter the fish die in 96 hours.

I think that's 1000ppm and it's quite a lot but since we don't know how much of the stuff actualy dissolve in the water or leak, I would definitly avoid it.

Just stick with glues that have been shown to be safe even when uncured. Cyanoacrylate glues like some super glues are great, especially when used with underwater epoxy putties like aquamend.

  • 4 years later...

Hate to dig up a really really old thread but, for anyone in the future that thinks to use this product on a build it has been reported many times to be safe. Many builds out there running for years after using this and no ill effects. For what it's worth...
