Gilman
I had the chance to go by Anthony Yang's (AquaDesignz.com) last night to shoot up his 240Gallon main tank. Most of the photos that I shot are specimens from his personal collection and are not for sale. I wish there was more time to shoot last night because he has so much cool stuff that I get overwhelmed on what to take pics of next. Anyhow, here are some of the shots that I have resized. Gilman
drdrew, thanks. Congrats on getting a new digital SLR!! You are going to be really happy with the capabilities you have with it. I am not familiar with the Digital Rebel, but I am sure it has alot of the same features as what I am using. Hopefully since it's a Canon it will be alot alike so I can in fact help a little. The 100mm is great for getting really close, but I do most of my shots with the 50mm (I don't own the 100mm but rent it every once in a while when I want to get REALLY close to something). If you have the means of course I would suggest getting both lenses so you can choose which you want to shoot with! The 50mm is around 200bux and the 100mm is around 400bux last I checked. Both are great lenses and have their place imo. I have gotten some really nice shots with the 50mm, and sometimes seeing more of the subject is better for the overall shot. Especially when showing photos to people who are not reef saavy. If you show a 100mm macro of a clam to someone who isn't a reef enthusiast, they just look confused by it as though it was one of those guess what it is photos. Of course reef enthusiasts go oooh and aaah. Gil Link to comment
drdrew
can you just not zoom in as much with the 100mm or stand a little farther back? or does this not work as well as being physically closer with the 50mm? Link to comment
Gilman
You should be able to do that with no problem. Physically it seems to make sense. I haven't done any experimenting with that though so I am not positive. Usually when I have the 100mm macro on, I am trying to get right up on things. Gil Link to comment
drdrew
thanks....my first pics with this beast to follow soon. if i get a chance..... but will be with the standard lens untill i decide which macro to purchase.... Link to comment
Gilman
Do you have a camera store locally that rents lenses? You can give em a try before you buy if you do. I would totally recommend it if possible. Gil Link to comment
drdrew
great idea, i'll find out. right now i'm trying to mess with the ISO settings to get a decent picture without a flash. Link to comment
Gilman
What are you shooting? Link to comment
drdrew
shooting into a 20H tank under 195 watts PC. just messing with ISO settings 100-400. camera has 1600 capabilities, but i understand there's some noise involved....i'm not using a tripod, so i'd like to keep my shutter speed fast to prevent blurr....maybe 125..so i need to crank open the aperture and increase the iso.... Gilman
I shoot most corals at iso100 and f13-22. This will capture the most detail (as you probably know). I usually shut off tank pumps to allow corals to be still for this type of exposure. Movement will definitely cause some blur which is no good. Fish is another story entirely. I will shoot fish sometimes around iso400 with f3-4 to make for a faster exposure that sacrifices some depth of field. Take alot of shots, you will get some winners. I also shoot mainly in AV (aperture priority mode). Hope this helps a little, Gil Link to comment
drdrew
ah. no rentals here in central mo. bit the bullet and spent 320 on the canon 50mm macro. played with it in the store....i think it's gonna be a winner. quality appears awesome. hopefully a few pics by this weekend worthy of sharing. Jahkaya
Gil: I love going to anthony's house. Next time you go take some pictures of his tiny striped gobies in his 72 bow. I want to buy his 120 Cube, as he gave me a price I couldn't resist, but that thing is so large that I don't have a place put it. We'll have to see what the tax return fairy brings. What do you think of his purple digitata in the 240? did you see his big trigger in his 40 sump? Are you using a Nikon? I can't remember. His Clowns laid eggs in the 120 cube under the anenome. I wish I had that much living space devoted to aquariums. Link to comment
skylsdale
All those shots and not a single full-tanker? Link to comment
Gilman
adin.. then pay me would ya! drdrew, can't wait to see some photos! Post em up for god sakes. Jahkaya, I dig going over there too man. I don't get over there often enough. His 120cube rules, I remember when he first set it up and it was his main tank. I saw the Clown Eggs (barely) they had just layed more I guess. Pretty cool stuff. Those clowns seriously happy with all those anenomes. I shot these pics with a Canon EOS D60. skysdale, nope no full tank shots this time around. I was in a rush to get as many pics as I could, and full tank just didn't happen. He actually has 3 seperate systems, but most of the shots are from the 240gallon main tank. I am hoping to get over there again soon when I have more to spend shooting. Gil Link to comment
