Here's an update on what I've been up to.

In addition to Calcium and Alk Buffer Two Part supplements on alternating days, I also add 1 TSP of Mg Weekly and two capfuls of Purple-Up.

All of my dosing is done manually except for my top off water which is gravity fed ATO. I will be looking into automatically dosing Two Part in the future but without a controller I dont feel safe automating anything like that.

As of right now in order to establish a ZeoVit Powered Ultra Low Nutrient System (ULNS) my dosing regiment is as follows:

Daily

  • 0.6 ml ZEOStart
  • 3 drops of ZEObac
  • Spectrum Pellet fish food and/or rinsed PE Mysis shrimp.

Weekly

  • 1-2 Drops of K-Z AAHC
  • 2 Drops of ZeoFood7
  • 2-3 Drops of K-Z Coral Vitalizer
  • 3-4 ml of Pohl's Xtra
  • 2 Drops of Sponge Power 3-4 x Weekly
  • 1 Tsp Strontium
  • 1 Tsp Potassium
  • 1-4 Drops Kent Lugols Solution
  • 3 ml K-Z Coral Snow 3-4x a week
  • I also Feed Cyclopeeze Rotifiers and ReefRoids Soaked in Selcon once in a while

For those of you who havent read much about this. The goal here is to dose a carbon source eg: ZeoStart, Vodka, Sugar, or Vinegar this carbon source feeds bacteria which will grow rapidly consuming Nitrate and Phosphate as they consume N/P the bacteria gets skimmed up quickly ridding the system of just about everything.

Benefits:

  • Crystal Clear Water, in fact I had to raise my light higher because the water was soo clear the corals were reacting to the increase in light.
  • The ability to feed heavily without worrying about algae or nitrates
  • Incredible coral colors and growth

Highlights

=================================================

FIRST POST:

Well I upgraded the 29 Gallon Biocube this weekend. Attached are the first few pictures (iPhone only) of what is the beginnings of a 47 gallon, shallow, rimless cube. The system is a sleek shallow rimless cube made with Starphire glass... 30x30x12

post-41698-1265689045_thumb.jpg
Because I needed to place the tank in the same location as the already existing Biocube, all the livestock from the drained 29 gallon tank was stored in a clean rubbermaid bin with a heater and two Nano Koralias.

post-41698-1265689064_thumb.jpg
All new substrate was used and a lot of new water had to be made to fill the extra 40 gallons of volume but almost everything for the previous system was used. There is most likely going to be a small re-cycle in the system due to loss of a lot of beneficial bacteria in the old sand but the extra water, sump space, and massive DSB and Refugium should help to keep everything in line soon enough.

post-41698-1265689075_thumb.jpg

The Setup is plumbed into a 30 gallon basement sump in a room that has inevitably been dubbed the "fish room."

post-41698-1265689092_thumb.jpg

post-41698-1265689103_thumb.jpg

After all the plumbing was finished the livestock was added.

post-41698-1265689116_thumb.jpg

Last but not least... here are the first attempts at an aquascape... water is still a bit cloudy from new sugar sized sand but you can get the idea.

post-41698-1265689124_thumb.jpg

...and another from above

post-41698-1265689131_thumb.jpg

So far so good corals and the paired black clowns seem happy, I will be testing for ammonia and nitrite frequently over the coming days/weeks to monitor the severity of the re-cycle.

I don't recommend upgrading a tank using this "do it in a day" method if you don't have to. In this case: in order to drill into the basement and keep the tank in the living room the only option was to put it in the same place as the existing system hence the tiring all weekend affair of upgrading with a basement plumbing mission. Ideally you would set up the new system have it run and cycle for a while before beginning to add livestock...

More updates to come on specifics in the system... also to see the Biocube system I tore apart to fill this glass box visit <a data-cke-saved-href="" href="" "="">the blog, which contains a full history of the previous system, and will continue to profile this new 47 Gallon Shallow Rimless Cube.

Ummm....####ing badass.

I really like the aquascape!

Thanks for the comments... I am pretty please with the looks of this system so far.

Also as a side note... The Koralia Pump and frag rack on the side are only temporary. Once I settle on a aquascape I will install my Vortech MP10, also I assume its inevitable that because I now have a basement sump, I will be adding a frag tank sometime in the future. Also I will be painting the stand all black as I would much rather a modern looking cube than the stained wood look that the stand currently has.

Any other comments or feedback? Specifically on the setup and the aquascape. This is the first layout I put together most of which was done in cloudy water so I could barely see where I was placing things.

Any suggestions? I'd love to hear them.

Hot damn, this is a sweet tank. First, I love sump plumbed to the basement. Second, I think that scape is perfect, nice work. Lastly, shallow rimless cube's are the best.

Thanks dude. The sump in the basement is awesome so far. I have a feeling it will really show its true value in the hot months of the summer when the tank is still nice and cool.

That is really nice... I have done the transfer everything from one tank to another in a day a few times... and it has mostly worked out... mostly.

Looking forward to more updates and details.

sweet tank! I am building a similar type setup! My cube is a 36x36x12 what are the dimensions of yours? I like your aquascape!

Thanks... sorry I thought I posted the dimensions. 30x30x12

Yea I hope my re-cycle is not too bad. I am testing 'trites 'trates and ammonia daily so I will be able to see the severity and intervene with water changes if need be.

Having any flow issues? My last large cube was a 36x30x16T, it had sand in it and i could not balance the flow. I either had too much and stirred the sand up, or not enough and had algae issues. I got tired of fighting it and just scrapped it. But with this tank i have painted the bottom black and have decided to go bare bottom. So far i like the results. Looks very clean and i have a 3600gph dolphin flowmaster pump on a CL and so far its done awesome! I am fighting some microbubble issues but once i get everything sealed up nicely it should be good to go.

Doesn't look like you are having much issues yet, but you tank is still pretty new and new tanks always look nice when first set up! I think thats why i like to get new tanks soo often! :)

Not sure how this will work out. As of right now the return lines are split so I have four directional nozzles to target corners and hard to reach areas behind rock which so far is working well. Also I have a a ball valve on the return line and its half closed so If i need more general flow I can crank that open.

Now for Powerheads I set up the Vortech MP-10 last night which is running at about half speed on short pulse mode. With the wave motion the little Vortech seems to be moving everything quite nicely but only time will tell. The pulses are short enough it does not disturb the sand bed and once you get the frequency correct you can get the waves to move the water the pump doesn't directly hit. Did I mention how incredible these Vortech pumps are? Upon initial setup I had 3 temporary Koralias to keep the water moving and they did an ok job. Since then they have all be taken out and replaced with the single Vortech. I have more motion with the one pump then I did with all three not to mention it is not unidirectional.

I like the tank itself, how much did that cost you?

I got it used so the price wouldn't be applicable, but a similar tank custom made new from the same company is about $699 Canadian + Taxes

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Any other advice/opinions?

Another iPhone photo of the system just to show how stunning the setup is in a living room. So far no signs of a re-cycle however it must be looming on the horizon.

post-41698-1265923750_thumb.jpg

The system has been running for five days now I may do the first water change this weekend however if the system shows signs of a re-cycle I will just ride it out as a water change will most likely only reboot the cycle process.

If anyone has any advice on navigating through the rough period after a tank upgrade any tips that i may not have thought about are greatly appreciated.

Any other feedback is encouraged as well.

Wow, that's looking awesome, love the scape.

Thanks for the comments patrick.

I will be updating first post with far more details and specs of the system either tonight or tomorrow.
