Paleoreef103
Awesome tank. This is amazing. Did you go from live baby brine shrimp--> frozen --> prepared food route for training the mandarins? How long did it take to train your mandarins? P.s. I have the same tank divider for my baby clownfish. Link to comment

pyrocreep
Wow...really...I don't see anything average in either of these tanks. I have to ask though what is the very vivid yellow and green frag that I see in several of your pictures. It looks like it's a chalice, but I can't really tell due to the size. Link to comment

konolua
Now this is my kind of tank! You did excellent. I agree with the folks that say that you have some excellent colors. Well done on the richordias. Killer system. What have you got going on underneath? What does the set up look like with the lights on? Just curious! Rock on. Link to comment

zook
Thank you everyone. I borrowed a new camera to take the pictures two days ago and was really nervous on how they turned out especially when I tried to catch a nuisance fish and drained the tank a few hours before the photos were taken. I'll try to post the extras photo soon. Paleoreef103/nanoreef-R: I'm in the process of doing a writeup for the Green Mandarin training process so please look forward to that soon, but I went from live adult Brine Shrimp to frozen, enriched, adult brine shrimp to frozen mysis. got2envy: Only a few macroalgae manage to survive in my tank, but I'll let you know next time I do a major trim. Things have been growing quite slowly since I have less fish/bioload and started dosing a variety of things. pyrocreep: I believe you refer to the Sunset Montipora, one of my favorite coral for sure. konolua: A 30g SW planted tank and a 20g refugium/sump support this one tank. Your tank is beautiful as well! Wish mine was larger. Link to comment
lex0219
WOW!!! Amazing tank! I love the top down shot of the zoo's and frogspawn in your first post! Seriously awesome though! Love the pipefish as well! Link to comment
kush'sreef
what kind of fish is the blue and yellow one in your planted tank? that guy is sick! Link to comment
ghurlag
I can only echo what others have said. Your shallow is AMAZING. I was equally impressed by the planted tank. Did you build the shallow or buy it? I'm seriously considering a similar setup in the near future. Link to comment
zook
Thanks for the comments. The fish in question is the Orangespotted or Harlequin Filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris); they're a tough fish to keep as it's an obligate corallivore, which mean they eat corals. However, with enough diligence and patience, they can be trained to eat prepared food; a hint on how is below. These fish have been breed and reared in captivity. The shallow was a custom built from another reefer. It first intended as a mantis shrimp tank, then a frag tank, then what you see today. I love the shallowness as well, makes feeding and maintenance very simple. Link to comment
ghurlag
I like that you have the Vortech on "Lagoon." It seems fitting for this tank, since it seems so lagoon-esque. Link to comment
violinist
with enough diligence and patience, they can be trained to eat prepared food; a hint on how is below. So if I interpret the picture correctly, you buy two of these fish. The first one that nibbles on a coral you take out and deep fry. This makes it clear to the remaining fish that eating prepared food is desirable behavior. Link to comment

zook
Time for a BIG photo update. The major changes since the beginning of the year is in salt mixes and in dosing of a variety of Brightwell products. I changed from Tropic Marin Pro Reef (TMpr) to Oceanic (O) with unfavorable results. Since March, I'm using a mixture of the two salts in a 2:3, TMpr:O ratio with better success. The following Brightwell products are currently being manually dosed nightly: MicroBacter7, Reef Biofuel, KoralColor, Potassion, CoralAmino, Iodion, Vitamin C, PhytoChrome, Zooplanktos-M, Microvore, and Reef Snow. I have, but contemplating the usage of Restor and Réplenish. Coral polyp extension and growth have been phenomenal and overall water parameters are stable. I have removed the majority of the fish and have a few in mind to replace them in the near future. Skimmer is off at night. Future plans include an upgrade to a slightly wider and taller Starphire tank. A UV sterilizer have been purchased will be running on the same timer as the skimmer. Enjoy all 48 photos!
